Forum Upgrade

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the scheduled 40 minute downtime today.

It was necessary to upgrade our core forum software.

This was a big'un with a lot of moving parts - so please use this thread to flag any probs.

In the immediate, your style choices (day vs night) will have likely changed. You can change this back in the footer link, or within your preferences;

Thanks to @mattw who helped massively by setting up a separate test site environment and being on hand to help prevent me breaking the whole thing.

The default is every page, but made it every 7?

It's intended to nag to encourage you to disable it mate.

Completely understand the reasons for it! I'm one of those annoying people who won't ever disable adblocker for anything - most websites prompt you once but not again afterwards, so I was just checking to see if that was a bug or intentional ;)

Increasingly, forums are forcing it to be disabled, unfortunately.

I have adblock on too, I just disable it for websites that don't take the piss.

Genuine question/feedback - is the adblocking warning supposed to be popping up as often as it is? Seems to be popping up every 3 or 4 page views at the moment.
Not arsed about this personally @GrandOldTeam because I 1) generally access on mobile where I don't use a blocker and 2) try to remember on each of my devices to add GOT to an allow list

That being said, on one of my laptops I got this message today and it made me realise I hadn't added it to AdBlock's allow list. However, now it is allowed (and I get the green thumb) but I'm getting messages saying I "recently" had an adblocker (fine with that too) but also despite several refreshes don't really see any ads flying around like I'd normally expect.

I'll keep monitoring of course, just wanted to give you a heads-up in case we need to do something other than add to the allow list to auto-pause adblockers on GOT

The forum update switched my adblocker back on for the site on my desktop.

Websites can't control your adblock - turning it on, or off.

It's localised. The only way we can influence it is if we changed the website domain which we didn't.

What we did change (and couldn't retain) was user selected styles. I still have a development site (a copy of the site prior upgrade) and prior the upgrade you was on a style with no ads. When we upgraded you went back to default. So while it might have seemed the site turned adblock on or off, it wasn't - you just went from using the site with a style which has no ads, to one which did.

everything is ok through x box. If this feedback helps 👍

Thanks

pics, gifs (moving) and stills are having a rough time. A significant % are now not making it through, with no explanation.

Ah, I think GIFs being converted to webp is making them not animate. Thanks will take a look.

You can trial and error it in your account here mate;

I did test it extensively and found it really accurate. I only found one case of one browser and one adblocker just on desktop which when turned on, was undetected. I never found any case it showing adblock enabled when it wasn't.

It takes x amount of undetected page views, and sometimes 30-60 seconds for the system to register you no longer have adblock on to stop nagging.

For what it's worth, on my work PC (Firefox) ads are blocked but I appear as cleared. I don't mind the reminder/warning here as I don't want to whitelist anything for obvious reasons, but just throwing that out there.

Shhh.

That's the single example I mentioned I found - and shared to the developer to fix.

Isn't replicated on mobile with Firefox/same blocker.

I can turn the below on and it'll work/detect Firefox blockers on desktop;
