2021/22 Frank Lampard

They were absolutely stymied by the intense pressing you could tell early in the game that certain players wanted to operate like they did when playing Brentford but the pressure just jarred them especially Gomes. That's challenging to instill that confidence in a week. I never really rated Howe but was he impeccable in his tactics.
They did a number on us yesterday. They set up their press very well and we couldn't find a way out.

Newcastle wanted it more than we did and it’s as simple as that. They looked dangerous in attack and actually knew how to get the ball forward.

Also, why do we continue to pass around the back?. We literally have no defenders that know how to pass and yet we continue to do it.
They passed around the back because newcatle pressed gomes and allan. Holgate and his defense palls simply had no outlet. Thats on Frank. It was a stupid gameplan, as simple as that. His failure to adapt to that was even bigger failure. He made the same mistakes at Chelsea.

Holgates decision making

Coleman's diminished physical state

Gomes and Allan unable to pass 6 yards under a little bit of pressure

Townsend playing LWB (really badly)

2 injuries to key players in the first 35

Sorry but you can't go in on Lampard for that. He was up against it from the first minute when they CMs decided to panic

VDB came on and did fine in the same position as gomes was.

Btw the amount of crosses Townsend put into the crowd was a disgrace, it was Sunday league behaviour.

Difficult for Lampard because there's a lot of players to choose from but only a handful in any sort of form. He'll have no idea who his best XI is now. Not a good place to be.
While he's not be in the best form, the absence of Doucouré in the midfield is a big one as he offers the strength and movement that we so greatly miss.

Missing Mina and Gray will be difficult too. For Saturday, we need to try and field a team that can actually take the game to Leeds as they'll press and press.

We are in big trouble, make no mistake, but, it is in no way on Lampard. He has only been through the gate for about 5 minutes and is just discovering how bad things are. That said, the big problems we had last night will probably not happen to us too often. We suffered greatly with the two injuries, Gray going off took away our raw blistering pace on the breakout and Mina, once again out medium to long term by the looks of it, is, unfortunately by far our best defender. Add to this the fact that St. Maximin had what will probably be the best game of his career and that Newcastle pressed us hard and Gomes is just not equipped to deal with it.

Last night is gone and all Lampard can do is learn from it. At the weekend we are home to Leeds, another team who will press us hard, we have to come up with a way to deal with it. In my opinion we need three in midfield and Gomes nowhere near the pitch, save him for Southampton away, because, against Leeds he would be a liability. As regards the defence, much as it frightens me, I think we have to go with a 4 with Keane and Holgate in the middle, neither of who I particularly trust, but, needs must.

Well over to you Frank, I hope you have some better ideas than I do, because what I have just come up with would very likely struggle to get anything off Leeds.

If he relys on the same players as the previous managers he will get the same results.

Coleman can’t be allowed to shaft another manager and just end up getting another run in the team under a new manager because he is captain.

Keane and holgate need punting irrespective of injury’s.

Gomes (who ive always liked and thought was just played in a system that didn’t suit him surely can’t get another start for us now). Needs to be a midfield 3 of Alli - Allan - VDB which actually looked good when played as a 3 last night towards the end.

Has to accept that Townsend is mediocre and move to a Richarlison - DCL - Gray front 3.

Agree with the latter, cannot do much about CB's though due to injry

Either frank shouldv catered for gomes/allan shortcomings, or he shouldv changed midgame. He did neither.

Again, i like his idea, but reality shows we cant play nice with this group. We just lost to another average team.
