Agree but clearly he was worried about Allan seeing red. We have needed a 433 for months but sadly even switching it up I struggle to see us actually getting anything either because of our lack of options. We play a three of Allan, Gomes and DVB I still don't see us winning? Who else could we play in there? I can't see it preventing the loss because of the lack of mobility in midfield (Doucoure is the only midfielder who can get around)and leadership at the back, those are the two key issues beyond a frail mentality for me...He got it wrong today.
He shouldn't have started the same team. Everton's squad cannot be run via a meritocracy because the squad is far too inconsistent. It has to be done on a game by game basis. If that means dropping players then so be it.
He also should not have taken off Allan and brought on Gomes, that was a big, big mistake. Both players let him and the team down, btw, but with Allan we had a midfield to work with. With Gomes we had nothing. It was a bad, bad move against a team that presses as well as Southampton do.
Ultimately the judgment call had to be whether Allan would see red or whether Gomes was suitable to play against their press. Given that we as a fanbase know what Gomes is like, the answer is simple to us. But Gomes let Lampard down too.Agree but clearly he was worried about Allan seeing red. Scary times ahead@Pat Butcher ,well what have you got to say give credit were credit is due please
Oh I agree 442 isn't a formation I would ever go with personally but so far Lampard is trusting a "winning team" but he isn't accounting for the fact we have fair-weather inconsistent players and you need different characteristics at home and away. Gomes was our only other option centrally and we know his limitations for me he lacks mobility and dynamism for this league. Possibly Alli as a ten was an option for sure but even that three lacks defensive ability to resist the press. Ultimately Alli will have to start playing especially away because we need players who can offer threat and hold the ball in the final third and pressure the midfielders higher up. He needs to learn fast there are players he can trust and those he can't in different circumstances because we are desperate for points!Ultimately the judgment call had to be whether Allan would see red or whether Gomes was suitable to play against their press. We didn't need to necessarily go to a 3.
Start Alli, play 4231 and outnumber S'ton that way.
S'ton press high, so that leaves gaps to exploit. That meant dropping Iwobi or Gordon - fine.
Honestly, Gordon is so predictable. He's great with the crowd at his back at home but away he's next to useless. He always takes too long on the ball. Iwobi is so hot and cold....
This is what I mean. Just drop players if you need to for the good of the team even if they've been playing well, because it means the system can work better. Doucoure, I agree, is a huge figure for us being able to play a three.
I just don’t think any of our fans are so reactionary and so lacking in intelligence to demand a manager be sacked after a few weeks in charge.Read back and see the questioning of Lampard - that's a small step away from looking to pitchfork him out.
Make no mistake there'll be a massive crisis for Lampard before very long and there'll be loads trying to engineer his departure.
We know that because we have just had 7 managers in 6 years.
I normally agree with you @davek but I find these comments to be absurd. No sane Evertonian believes that the genie of revolt can go back in the lantern if we lose against City and Spurs.
There'll be pandemonium and demands for sackings.
That's not hazarding a guess, that is acast iron guarantee based on reality 7 managers in 6 years.
playing gomes, allan instead of alli, patterson, myko is playing for the win?As Benitez proved adequately, don't attack and you don't get results. After years of suffering we now have a manager whose aim is to try and outplay the opposition. Truth is, there are only two great teams in the PL. All the others are beatable, but only if you try and beat them. Under Lampard we'll continue to lose games we won't be happy about. But his belief in playing on the front foot will mean he's going to win the 3 points more often, certainly more often than the once in 15 Benitez did once he got past his opening results.
I'm far from certain we'll survive (certainly after today's away wins by Burnley and Watford) but going looking for all the points (OK, excepting against The RS and City) has to be the way out of the mess we're in, and definitely when up against fellow strugglers. Even more so as our defence is so bad.
Yes, as Patterson obviously isn't ready, myko we have no idea if he is any good and has just had covid. And Alli isn't a CM.playing gomes, allan instead of alli, patterson, myko is playing for the win?

Not sure they have yet they're just absolutely shocking mentally crumble under any pressure. Downing tools suggests they can be better but aren't arsed not sure mentally away many of them can stand-up and we also lack what's required mobility wise without Doucoure to compete , also we won our last home game.Sadly Frank will not be here long...nor will the next manager...nor the next. The players, our brave, brave band of brothers have downed tools yet again
