2021/22 Frank Lampard

I have to disown a previous post because Frank has utilized pragmatism especially for a manager who typically extols an attacking and possession based philosophy. It must pain him a little for our squad to only have 30% of the ball in games but he's exhibiting some versatility which is vital for any young burgeoning manager. Hopefully we can stay up and we bring in some players to enact his original vision.

Lampard got it spot on again. I was really impressed how he got the players to keep to the plan rather then playing the occasion and getting drawn into needless pressing.

Can't say I was happy to see us line up with wing-backs either and while it did stifle Iwobi, Chelsea didn't really have a sniff until post 60 mins. The fact they had 78% possession and still returned a lower XG then us shows how well drilled we were.

Very, very impressive stuff.

Not for me, we've been down that road and paid out for the superstar manager. Understandable at the time but in reality we should have been looking for a project manager like Arteta or Potter. Now we stay the course with this project and the team in place or we just end up sinking further

It's a hard one and a hypothetical.

I suppose it was more to point out, he makes a lot of sense even if we go down.

My point is that the club frustrated any real planning by failing to sell players. We were in shock and disarray when Ancelotti left. It was compounded by a very problematic transfer situation and FFP crunch.

The start to the season was better than expected. In that sense the planning worked. It all started crumbling when injury after injury mounted up.

Godfrey, Mina, DCL, Gray, Gbamin, Delph, Townsend, Doucoure and Davis have all missed a significant part of the season through injury. There are probably others too, but I forget - there have been so many.

That is has really put us in this position.

There have been lots of factors.

But Benitez, under difficult circumstances didnt help.

I'd liken it to playing the open on a windy day, and trying to blast the ball up in the air. It was naive management.

Tbh 7 points out of United Leicester Liverpool Chelsea is pretty good considering we’re in the bottom 3. The Burnley results and the odd horrendous showing like the Palace cup game and Kenny’s clown show v Burnley have soured what is actually quite a good turnaround from Lampard.

We should have beaten Burnley, the loss to West Ham was just annoying that a bloke curls a direct free kick in, Liverpool we were shafted by the ref. We were actually ok in all three away games. We had a bad 20 mins v Leicester but then have been pretty consistent against them, United and Chelsea recently. Even the Newcastle performance wasn’t that bad considering they were flying at the time.

There’s a more settled feel about the side with Mykolenko and Coleman stopping the ridiculous fullback situation of two different players every week turning out. Holgate plus one seems to be doing alright in the middle. Then it’s a midfield three anchored by Delph with Iwobi and one of Allan/Doucoure adding some energy. Front three is picking itself recently.

It’s a world away from the back fives he was playing at the beginning with Gomes and Allan lost in a midfield two, Kenny or Godfrey at left wingback etc.

Got to give credit to Frank for improving us as we’ve gone on. The benefit of staying clam and not panicking and firing him as some wanted.

That was our nightmare run, and the performances were ok. Burnley was a bit of a horror show, but the rest were good. And we have more points than we might have hoped.

The key question now, is can we win the "winnable" games. The Burnley game is a concern, as that was a game we should have won on paper. Watford are worse than Burnley though.

If we play as we have, we win Watford, Palace and Brentford. We probably lose the other 2 (though a draw in 1 would be lovely).

In practice though, there is always a slip up. It's why Leicester is an important game and one I think we might do ok in. I'd take a point, but if we play as we did yesterday, or in the derby, I'd fancy us for all 3.

Even in the league, we played badly against them, but after the first 20 we created the better chances.

let him keep us up then he can look to how he wants us to play

we can’t take anything for granted and have to now do it away from home. and have to keep winning, it doesn’t mean as burnley or leeds have these fixtures etc it can be harder as anyone can beat anyone.

get the wins we need and forget the other games it’s about us.

do you think we can/will stay up mate?

I think we can. I'd say we have a better chance than not of staying up, but it's still too close for comfort. Burnley stringing 3 wins together has shocked me. Had they not done that we would have been safe by now
