A manager's job – first and foremost – is to get the best out of the players at his or her disposal. This isn't some question of moral fibre, or who was in the right and who was wrong. It's about what works.
Now, granted, the ability of players imposes a natural ceiling on what a manager can be reasonably expected to get out of a squad. Benitez had his squad at nowhere near that ceiling and was in fact performing far worse than any of the other managers we've seen flounder in similar circumstances.
But yes, to bring it back to Lampard: there will, of course, be trials and hiccups. But, while I was sceptical of Frank's appointment, I increasingly feel he has the ability to lead, persuade and instil confidence with this group of players. I may well be wrong – I'm operating on scant evidence – but this feels like a much better appointment on that score than any manager has for a long time.
