What about after 17 results with 2 wins and 10 losses. (5 draws include 2 draws with lower league teams).
I said at the time Benitez needed to go by that point but fans wanting him out before he even started wasn’t helpful. I’m not going to pretend it was a picnic after that either. We stayed up, but the same problems that had beleaguered Benitez absolutely battered Lampard as well:
Injuries - DCL, DvB, Patterson, Doucoure, Godfrey Townsend all injured for Lampard
Player errors - Kenny torpedoed the Burnley crunch game, Keane and Coleman almost did the same first half v Palace, Branthwaite v Brentford
Player attitude - compare the second half v Palace when we had to win vs the cup game agaisnt Palace or some of the games v Southampton and Newcastle. It’s night and day and just shows that the players weren’t up for it until they had to be, a shocking mentality.
We stayed up just about but it’s about time finally that someone at Everton solved these major issues rather than just looking for a managerial change. It was my argument under Ancelotti, under Benitez, and now under Lampard.
Yes he has the fans behind him, that puts him at an advantage to Benitez, he also seems to get on better with players, again another advantage, but it is undeniable that if we keep getting swathes of injuries to key players, if that then leads to our poorer players making critical errors, and if the players carry on with their ‘we’ll play when we feel like it’ attitude then Lampard will experience all the same issues our last six managers have faced.
Hopefully we are turning the corner (even though I feel like I’ve said this loads of times over the years). We have a manager and DOF who seem in unison. We are getting in players who seem to want to be here and move us forward. Player attitude seems to be improving (levels against Chelsea were consistent with end of last season)
We won’t really turn anything around though until we stop getting major injuries which allows the error merchants of Keane Coleman Davies Holgate Gomes back into the team.
