2022/23 Frank Lampard

It's partly that and partly an inability to create enough. They are both equally big problems and both are due to the lack of talent and firepower in forward areas.
McNeil has scored from basically his only decent chance. Gordon has missed maybe one chance? Gray missed a couple I think. We're not talking about a bunch of sitters going wide because we don't actually have sitters all that much.

So yeah it is part each but it's like 95/5.

Missing two clear cut chances isn’t an example of not being clinical enough?
Yes, maybe one time a season you score two goals from those four shots but a far better way to win football matches is to at least compete against the other team in possession, territory and the volume of chances.

Missing the forest for the trees.

To be fair if you look at what Lampard actually said I think it's pretty clear that he wasn't saying our only (or biggest) problem was not being clinical. He's basically saying that we came with the old KITAP1 game plan and if we'd been more clinical then maybe it would have worked. He does effectively say that ideally that wouldn't be the plan and there are lots of things we can improve on but for now in that type of game we're trying to be competitive and make the most of our opportunities when they come along.

You can obviously debate the merits of the approach etc but I don't think it's accurate to suggest the manager thinks our only issue is not being able to shoot.
He just brings it up an awful lot is all. Hopefully that's just a press thing.

Missing the forest for the trees.

But we missed two clear cut chances so usually yes, you score at least one of them if you have any sort of composure in front of goal.

This argument you’re making again smacks of someone who didn’t actually watch the game and just looked at the stats and went “oh we had 4 shots and 0 on target so we clearly didn’t create any chances” when in reality we had the clearest chances from open play in the game and ballooned both of them into the Thames. He’s not wrong, our attacking players utterly stink.

Not true, the Kane one that Pickford smothered was a better chance

It's a lack of talent in attack. You can only improve so much in front of goal if the talent and natural ability is not there. The manager needed to be provided with more firepower in the summer.
You make him sound like a passive victim. If we are short up front - and we are - then Lampard is partly culpable for that. His predecessor was "provided with" 1.7m in his summer window. In my book, he deserved the sack for allowing himself to be duped by the board because no sane manager would take that Everton side into a season with a warchest of 1.7m. The way some talk, Frank is a trussed up mummy, locked into a casket, with no say whatsoever in transfer strategy. Enough! This is his team now. It might not be good enough, but he has responsibility for it along with others at the club. Otherwise, we can get some other dummy without agency to oversee somebody else's team.

Splitting hairs here. Spurs score both of those chances we had in the first half because their forwards are competent.
It is true, we could try to find another Son who is quite literally the only person in all of football who is good because of quality of finishing and not because of the volume of attacking output.

Far more likely we just control games, have the ball near the opponents goal more and generate more shots. And then we can score 2 out of 12 shots and it still counts as two goals despite our "conversion rate" being average.

He had his best attacker sold, that didn't happen the previous summer. I'm sure money would have been provided to Benitez if he made a £60m sale.

And yes, I do believe the manager was let down by the recruitment. The main priority should have been replacing Richarlison and Calvert Lewin, instead we focused on other areas. Only time will tell if it has worked.

What on earth does this mean?
