You have changed your tune a little:

Post in thread 'Rafael Benitez' https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/rafael-benitez.113286/post-9203618

I still stand by that opinion - young managers like Potterball are hyped up too much by the fut hipsters.

We have to be realistic - at present time with our FFP issues we cant attract a Mourinho or Pochettino so we do have to bite the bullet a little in the short term - which is why I would go for someone like Potterball or T Fronk until the situation improves as both are streets ahead of your Lampards/Rooneys of the world.

Lampard was quoted recently saying you can learn as much from a League 1 manager as you can from Mourinho about modern management due to how the game has evolved since Jose was in his prime.

That tells you all you need to know about the arrogance of some of these young managers - Mourinho celebrated winning a European trophy last season whereas Lampard celebrated avoiding relegation !

To quote Bertrand Russell: "I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong". I undeservedly gave Ancelotti a lot of criticism, but I stand by the fact that he was not a good fit with us. Ancelotti is too pragmatic and results-oriented, but not the man you hire to develop a mediocre club. I also believe that Bielsa is a very good coach. I justify this by the fact that his teams are very recognisable, i.e. he is extremely skilled at turning theory into practice. The objection to Bielsa is his defensive play and that he is too idealistic at times. Two managers who thrive in two different contexts. But let's not discuss water under the bridge.

The current situation is such that a loss against Bournmouth should make us hit the panic button. Then Lampard has an average of less than 1 point per game, and no noticeable progress. He has neither results to show (Ancelotti), nor a clear way of playing football (Bielsa). In addition, he is a blank slate, like Gerrard, and lacks the experience that the managers of our competitors have.

Oh god, you're doubling down on the Bielsa is a better manager than Ancelotti schtick.

Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised if Bill had already made some sentimental promises as he whispered sweet nothings in the ear of "What a Manager"!

Got to remember this was prior to Thelwell's appointment.

From the outside looking in it seems like we've given the DOF full control this summer in terms of recruitment - you would like to think that would continue and he allowed to appoint the next manager down the line.

He's merely the latest puppet.

Howe has done well. But he has been given huge funds to do it. Lampard hasnt. Lampard inherited a team with 1 win in 14 games.

What position where Newcastle in january 1st? Still bottom 3 from memory. They improved once he spent a fortune.

Howe inherited a team that had played 11 and won 0.

Spent the same amount of money in Jan as we did in the Summer and got them firing.

Spurs losing against the RS and Conte is in constant activity on the sideline trying to encourage his players. Contrast that with Frozen Frank, immobile on the sideline throughout the game.
The Bournemouth v Everton match will be Benitez Norwich v Everton from 12 month ago. Loose it at he will be history!

I don't want us sacking a manager every 6 months, but it seems to me that we require a "maverick" to change the way that we play.
We have employed the safe guys, good with the media etc, its now time to remember that we are in these competitions to win things.
We need the style of play changing, 99% of teams use the high press these days, we let teams play with 25 yards to spare, how many times do we pass a ball backwards instead of someone making a run into space.
Haven't got a clue who could change us, I only watch the Premier League, just know that we are not going to set the world alight in the way that we all want with the set up that we have.
I like Frank and I think he has changed the mindset about the place, but we will be looking at the league tables for the wrong reasons for ever unless something drastic changes.
