GAA 2022

Dubs are there to be beaten a Chara, Kildare will give us a game, Meath to despite their troubles and Id be quietly wary of Louth. Alls not well, I don’t really believe a lot of the rumours that fly around, but after our Monaghan game was speaking to someone very very close to the group, who told me three senior players went to Dessie and said - can we look at this - it’s not working. All three told if they didn’t like it they could leave the panel, things aren’t good and Dessie won’t be changing.

I thought the “melee” was overdone in media to be honest, I’m on the road a long time, I’ve seen 100s of melees during and after games, I don’t mind them to be honest, shows a bit if passion. But the lads and managers will be upset themselves they all fell for it, they all know. Once the spotlight went on it, it was inevitable, the GAA would act. I think a lot of pundits have an axe to grind with Ulster teams, particularly from the South West - were there is an unhealthy over representation in my view and often an active agenda, unfairly so. I think Rian O Neil, was a lucky man mind on the but I saw, though I think the 3/2 split de facto puts the blame unfairly on Armagh, I think the Donegal players suspended are very important players for them though.

Overall I definitely think there is an unfair bias toward Ulster teams, as you say I was down behind the goal in Tralee when we and Kerry had a mass brawl after the game in 2019 - though I think Jonny Small may have got a suspension, the following year we had a brawl up in Omagh in the Tunnel at half time in a Tornado, fans piling in and all, dont think there was any punishment, All Ireland final in 2020, ourselves and Mayo had slaps going in to the tunnel at half time, while Philly McMahon square punched Aidan O Shea on the sideline last year in the All Ireland Semi. If it was an Ulster team, it would be puke football and thuggery and likely suspensions. So definitely Ulster gets unfair treatment. There is a snobbery in football in so called traditional football counties and in the GAA that always see Ulster as upstarts and bring the over physical approach, that leads to bias in my view, unfairly so in my view for Ulster teams. Was laughing at Pat Spillane last week praising Kerry defence, passion, will to win anyway, getting men back in a defensive structure - we know what we would say if it was an Ulster team - case in point. Objectively i think the GAA unfairly cultivate Dublin and Kerry, in terms of profile and romance. Look at David Clifford’s profile Vs Rian O Neil, whose as talented to my eye.

Overall, I think Ulster teams are hugely marginalised, which undermines the All Ireland Championship, it’s far easier for Dublin or Kerry to win an all Ireland, then Armagh, Tyrone or Donegal and that’s unfair - while the Ulster Championship is brilliant and exciting, the sheer competitiveness of it, undermines the counties in Ulster and other counties and provinces can saunter to a semi/quarter fairly fresh. Unfair. I remember when Leinster was competitive and we and Meath used to batter each other years after year, you’d be so exhausted in every way getting through Leinster, you’d have little in the tank for the rest of the championship, that’s how I see Ulster at the moment and as I think it’s harder for an Ulster team to win an All Ireland then say Dublin or Kerry.
Kildare will never have a better chance of winning Leinster than this year. By reading your post, Dessie really doesn’t seem to be helping himself!

Re melees, it is an easy thing to stamp out if HQ want it to happen. I don’t they do though, they seem content to deal with individual incidents rather than apply a blanket dictat.

Spillane I can’t take seriously as everything is seen through a Kerry lens. Any team considered a threat to them are demonised week in week out by him in openly bitter fashion. I’ll tell you who else gets on my goat! Colm O’Rourke. A thuggish player in his day but displays total hypocrisy towards hard play in today’s game. RTE needs a total clear out of pundits.

On that point re Kerry’s defence, they actually deployed 2 sweepers against us in Armagh. Spillane certainly didn’t mention that!

I played club football in Kildare at one stage a chara, the talent is there but the mindset not so sure, Daniel Flynn is incredible, real top tier forward. Jimmy Hyland looks to really have come on for me this league as well. Kildares issue is always psychological. Mobilised though they bring some crowd and their tails are up, think Leinster will be competitive. On Dessie i think the worst thing to happen to him was winning an All Ireland in 2020, not many men in Dublin have won one as a manager, so i think now he has won hes content enough and it can never be said about him he didnt win one - if that makes sense. Dessies always played like this, NF and his underage teams, very open pocession based and defensively naive. It will be his last year. If things arent right behind the scens and they dont seem to be, Cormac Costellos - old man is the CEO so he will know all about it. Wel get a competitive Leinster championship this year, i think i think Kildare, Meath and Louth could give us games. We're due a softening of our cough in Leinster.

Agree mate there is inconsistency in decision making around certain displinary issues and its often not applied fairly. Pundits like Spillane, shouldn't be able to influence whats on the desk of the GAA on a Monday morning. I'll never forgive him for hanging Diarmuid Connolly after he put his hand on the arm of the ref in PL, i was right beside the incident in the stand, three fella were battering him, over the touchline and he put his hand on the lines man to say "come on what do i have to do" - Spillane went berserk on the SG and Dermo got a 6 game ban, essentially ended his inter county career as he headed of to the states after that - its wrong - all so Kerry can have a greater chance of an All Ireland. I bumped into Demo at our Donegal game in Croker a couple of weeks back, lovely young fella and a credit - he didnt deserve what Spillane did and the game was poorer for it. Just as th eg ame between Armagh and Donegal will be poorer for the players not involved. Its wrong and pundits shouldn't have those powers to influence sporting outcomes so biasedly - its wrong. Kerry are as defensive and as cynical as anyone and i wouldn't let anyone say different, you wont hear a Kerry pundit, say it though, nor will RTE edit highlights that show persistent fouling and blanket defenses. Dublin do it to - your not successful if you cant get men behind the ball and be cynical when you need to be. But Ulster teams are stigmatised for it.

I hated O Rourke as a player, broke my heart so often, brilliant he was, but his Meath team would kill stone dead. Hes another with an axe to grind and a Meath agenda with Dublin in particular, about splits and everything. Ill say one thing for him, ive bumped into him more then once and told him he been talking through his hoop, to be fair he takes it would good fun and can be good craic and will give you a wink - hes not as dour as he comes across on Telly - he knows well what hes at.

Huge pity Armagh arent togging out today, to my mind they deserved to be in the league final. Best team we played in Croke Park this league.

Couldn't agree more about Spillane and O'Rourke. Two dinosaurs who shouldn't be near the analysis table. They are totally out of touch and full of their own importance. The analysis on rte can be painful.

Very entertaining first half in the Division 1 final between Kerry and Mayo. Clifford is some player for Kerry. Incredible to see the speed of the attackers in this game compared with the dreadful crabs wearing our RBJ.

Kerry by 6 at HT.

I am declaring that Kerry will walk the All Ireland this year. Superb performance today.

Dubs, like Everton in Purgatory.

Radio Kerry commentary on a lovely David Clifford point: "that's nicer than any Toblerone" lol
Always loved Kerry fans. Meath and Dubs came to respect each other after the incredible 4 matches in 91.I remember being so exhausted when we lost in the last minute of the 4th game just hugging a Meath fan who was beside me.

The most hostile atmosphere I ever encountered in all my years following football was against Mayo a few years ago. Unfortunate, because I have some really good mates from Mayo. However, it was really nasty.

Maybe (hopefully) the Dubs will give the rest a chance again, but I can't see ye having to wait as long as Everton though!
Mate, I can say that I lived to see Dublin win six in a row. I don't think any County will do that in my lifetime.

This Kerry team looks excellent- leading by 15 against Mayo in a League Final!! That goal borderline square call but very well deserved win

No surprise.... Clifford Laoch na himeartha - superb player despite terrible abuse from his Mayo opponent.

Is this a new thing that that first mention in speeches is to thank the referees and officials. Very welcome gesture. Noticed it yesterday too.

Well done Kerry!
