Was in Belfast over the weekend on a stag do, where one afternoon we had a Gaelic games session at a local club. We were given an intro to both sports, the rules, the general structure of it throughout the country and the basics of each and having a game of hurling and then football between the 20 of us.

Absolutely loved it.

Nails sport but as we're all rugby/football lads we had a great time. Some pretty spicy challenges all over the place!

Doing my best to keep up with it all via this thread ?
Get yourself a Hurley and a sliotar, great way to spend half an hour in the park taking your frustrations out on it.

The early noughties was a great period for hurling. You had that great Kilkenny team under Brian Cody, Cork had a serious team as well, Tipp were strong, and there was that great Waterford team, of Ken McGrath Tony Browne Paul Flynn and John Mullane, that was so unlucky not to win an all Ireland.

Wexford nearly beat Cork in that drawn 2003 all Ireland semi final, Clare were past their 1995 to 1998 peak, but they got to an all Ireland final in 2002, and they could have knocked out both Kilkenny and Cork in 2004 and 2005 respectively. That period from the early nineties until around the mid noughties, was my favourite era for hurling to be honest.

Did Offaly not win an All Ireland in the mid 90's out of the blue too ?

Offaly had great teams in the 80's and 90's, they've had a sad demise since 2000 sadly. Both their hurling and football teams, got to the all Ireland finals in 1981.

That was an amazing achievement for such a small county. They beat Galway in the hurling final, and lost to Kerry in the football one. Offaly would have their revenge on Kerry a year later though.:D

There were a couple of families near where I grew up in Dublin in the 80's that were Hurling mad.

Offaly famously stopped Kerry's five in a row in 1982 with a last minute goal. One of those moments where I remember exactly where I was when it happened - I was snogging a girlfriend in the lounge when Dad came flying in to announce the result!! :) She wasn't impressed and we didn't last much longer

Cork and Kerry is a great match. Cork denied a clear free which should have them only 1 behind at HT. Kerry putting in some savage hits DCL would love to be playing in this :) It is on Sky Sp Arena if you have it

Kerry now 9 ahead - Cork tried their best but ran out of steam - just watched that video again (posted above) on the 82 final. What an incredible match

Cork 0-11 Kerry 0-23, Cork were competitive for about 50 minutes, so that's kind of a positive of sorts, but Kerry pulled away and were very comfortable winners in the end.
