We have higher priorities.
We don’t really need a CB. We are desperate to sort out mid field and right back / right wing.
This one had the feel to me of when we signed Vlasic along with Klassen and Rooney all in the same position.
The transfer policy needs to focus on what we really need first - CM, RB, RW, LB ang GK. If we managed anything close to that we would be doing well. Spending our budget on a CB Right now seems an error to me, especially with Branthwaite and Gibson coming through,
Yeah would have loved Gabriel but if moneys tight because of previous overspending sort out MIDFIELD x2, rw, rb and let our young promising defenders be coached by CARLO Ancelloti on how to defend, address 4 priority positions, Cull squad balance books. UTFT.

Exactly. Also lm sure Carlo would be part of any decision not to pursue Gabriel for these reasons.

Not arsed about losing out on him as I know nothing about him. Would seriously question the logic of going from a 22 year old left footed defender to a right footed 28 year old journeyman CB for almost the same money if that occurs tho..

well according to our resident “all knowing sages” he’s the second coming of Thiago Silva, Baresi and Nesta all rolled into one.

despite none of them actually having seen him play.

It’s a tricky concept to get your head around, but just go with it and use it to bash the management team anyway.

So he's either good and we've lost out

Or

He's crap and we've dodged a bullet - which in consequence would be another mark against the recruitment eye of Mr Brands

Which one is it?

You cant say you aint bothered by us missing out on a highly rated good young player who has been one of our main targets for months otherwise your expectations of the club must be very low.

Or is this another one of those "Rom aint all that we can spread the goals around the team" type statement?

Probably just me but felt like this was a lost cause from the get-go. I know reports say we had a deal wrapped up pre Covid but as soon as football got going again we never looked in the race and maybe that's because we tried to renegotiate the deal and screwed ourselves over or maybe it's because the player thought he could do better but either way it looks like we've wasted a few weeks chasing a target we were never getting. At least this has happened early in the window.

I've not seen him play but a right sided CB isn't at all what we need. Hell, a CB isn't at all what we need.

The ignore button is getting a hell of a workout this morning
TBH mate I must already have them on ignore (very possible), because the majority of the posts I'm seeing are making absolute sense. It's as if the silent majority have woken up this morning and said I've had enough of this nonsense. Very pleasing to see. ;)

Still, it would be very nice to get our first senior summer signing on board.

Perhaps. Or I suppose our definitions of “absolute sense” may differ wildly.

I think theyre talking about left sided Gabriel rather than the right sided 3 at the back Maksimovic.

Cant believe that rumour is true...

Lets see what happens with Gabriel if theres a final twist in the tale.

We all do, the only way we are going to stop shooting is to go all in with the first bid, that’s how we end up spending £28m on Bolasie, £45m on Sigurdsson, £30m on Iwobi etc. We cut that out by only spending big on areas of need (CM) and look at good players on cheap deals (Sangare etc)

The problem is meg that if we pull out the running then we go to our 2nd choice which wouldn't be as good as option 1 and for what? A few million.

If we pull out then its twice in 2 consecutive windows that Brands has chased a player for a significant period of time before pulling out of a deal over money and going for a cheaper worse option.

I would have hoped he had learnt his lesson from the Zaha chase but apparently not. Thats been my biggest criticism of Brands appointment- he has never worked with this sort of finance before - in Holland he was at one of the bigger clubs paying a few million here and there for players.

That strategy falls on its backside in this league awash with money he either has to pay the asking price or start chasing cheaper options instead of trying to con clubs into accepting low ball offers for very good players.
