Hand pick them off before they eat the leaves to nothing any caterpillar will decimate a plant - look at your plants first thing in the morning a moth or butterfly has laid loads of eggs that hatch out on your plant daily collect them in a jam Jar & destroy them as if they turn into a Butterfly or Moth they will return to lay eggs so you will have an alarming cycle of decimation of your Zinnias...@Joey66 i found these caterpillars munching on my zinnias. Any idea what they are? They managed to devour a few flowers within a day because I had not see them the day before.

Hang on, you told @COYBL25 to walk instead of running yesterday lol@Sassy Colombian @Joey66
I know this won't be a popular opinion (particularly in a gardening thread) but give me caterpillars, moths and butterflies over flowers any day.

Thanks for the advise, Joey!Hand pick them off before they eat the leaves to nothing any caterpillar will decimate a plant - look at your plants first thing in the morning a moth or butterfly has laid loads of eggs that hatch out on your plant daily collect them in a jam Jar & destroy them as if they turn into a Butterfly or Moth they will return to lay eggs so you will have an alarming cycle of decimation of your Zinnias...
Over in the UK we have the common Cabbage White Caterpillar - I grew Kale & it attracted them as a butterfly or Moth will be attracted by the smell of the plant - I just went around picked them off & fed them to my KOI Carp fish - also any eggs you will see on the underside of the leaves simply rub the off with your thumb ....
You could spray them with a systemic insecticide the kills caterpillars if need be before they decimate your Zinnias .... they eat the leaves at an alarming rate so deal with them ASAP ......or your lovely crop will be gone they will also eat any other plants you have .... they host then look for more food ...
Yes they are attracted by the smell of our Zinnias - not the larvae of the parent you have correctly got rid of, but the butterfly or moth itself will come back to lay eggs again & again - there will be eggs on the back of the leaves check most of them they will be in clusters as the adult will lay loads not just the odd one .....Thanks for the advise, Joey!
I usually check on my plants daily but have not seen any eggs that's why I was so puzzled to see those caterpillars. I did collect them but couldn't bear to kill them and instead tossed them across the street at a near area by the woods. So you are telling me that once they turn into a butterfly or moth they would come back to my zinnias?
I stopped growing cabbage because in our area the Cabbage Caterpillars are aggressive about attacking plants and couldn't keep up with it. Now I only grow kale but I have to be constantly checking those plants too.
Not me. I love butterflies and I try not to kill moths or caterpillar even when attacking my flowers or crops but I can't decorate my house throughout the summer with those but I can with flowers so for me it would be ?> ?@Sassy Colombian @Joey66

@Sassy Colombian That neem oil stuff I told you to get for your other plants, that will keep the caterpillars away from your normal plants also. Thanks for the advise, Joey!

Simon, I'm going out later this morning and spray them again with it. I have done so earlier in the season but it has been a few weeks. Would the Neem oil hurt the plants if sprayed too often?@Sassy Colombian That neem oil stuff I told you to get for your other plants, that will keep the caterpillars away from your normal plants also.
Thanks for sending those pics of the larvae.
Wow so many caterpillars, they are so pretty too and I would have to squash them
