Gareth Barry if we didn't give him a 3 year contract.

Still a place in the team for someone of his style, unfortunately its just not him!

If we can train Besic in that role then I think we're onto a winner. We can't stick Besic and McCarthy together in their current guises, that's just daft, having 2 players always pressing, chasing and engaging just leaves you open to smart players ghosting in behind you while you've left your position.

Which of the academy lads would be the best in the role?

I'm not sure there is anyone to be honest.

Tom Davies, Ryan Ledson and Liam Walsh have all played deeper roles with the aim of starting attacks, but I think it's a role that you only learn the mentality of when you're in your early twenties and see how the game works through the eye of a tactician.

Unless you're bred like Busquets in the art of recycling possession quickly and efficiently since your teens, it's something that our lot only really learn because of a manager philosophy not a club philosophy.

After a micro-resurgence with one decent performance against Palace he went back to awful ways today. Why he plays 90 minutes every week is beyond me, absolute liability again.

Surely ledson couldnt be any worse than barry?
