I suspect his family is well financially attended to. So, the real question is : what's best for him?. As RM has alluded to, the next stage in Barry's footballing career, won't be a consideration purely motivated by money. Everton has every chance of retaining him.
And if we don't? c'est la vie

To be honest I don't presume to know anything about Barry's financial arrangements its none of my business really, but like I said its his last main contract he'll naturally want to squeeze as much out of it as possible. Of course his family will be a factor in it but footballers move clubs, cities and countries all the time and deal with these situations. It's fine for Martinez to say this decision should be about Barry's footballing career, of course he's going to try and influence in any way possible. But in a profession where divorce and bankruptcy occurs to a high percentage of ex players in the years to follow it's not such as great idea.

Not just yet, but if someone comes in offering them silly wages they will be off in a shot.
Yeah...for them at 20 years old, you are probably correct . The rich get richer eh?. I think we need to return to some form of a gold standard. All this creating money out of thin air is not good for egalitarianism (seeing as neither you nor I get first use of it)

I defer to your greater analysis on such matters...I hadn't considered divorce complications.

he's plenty of money to foot any bills coming his way i'd have thought.120 grand a week for the last few years would do that.

He will surely get a job in football when he's playing days end also.financially he's set for life

So shortly hes gonna go from 120k a week to around 75k a week, then hes gonna go from 75k a week to nothing, now whilst that seems like an awful lot of money to us, its just a wage to him and he cuts his cloth accordingly, his wife gets her nails done, his kids go to private schools, they have Uni to come, hes gonna retire around 35 and then hes gonna have to live for the next 30 or years on his "savings", he might not get a job when he retires, I mean hes not ex RS, so the job offers are limited, whos to say he has savings? Maybe he made some bad investments, maybe he will in the future.

You all need to stop comparing pro footballers with normal people, they arent normal people.

If the rumours of him being on £120k a week are anything to go by, it goes a little like

£120k x 52 x 5 = £32m (minus tax)

Say he was on £60-80k a week at Villa before he left for the last 3-4 years

£60k x 52 x 4 = £12.5m

Say the 4 years before that he was on £35k a week

£35k x 52 x 4 = £7.25m

and the previous years he was on £20k

£20k x 52 x 6 = £6.25m

Obviously add things such as boot sponsorship etc, you can easily add £20m through the course of his career for me.

So With all that i see he's earnt £78m over the course of his career, if he really is gonna consider uprooting his family, even after all that, then he really is greedy. Even if he doesn't stay at Everton, i'd still be surprised if he didn't stay in the local catchment. He seems like a sensible fella, not like some of these idiots, i'm sure you won't hear about him being on the dole in about 10 years time.

Barry comes across as a man who has invested his money mainly in property and long duration fixed income securities. I am not privy to his investment portfolio of course, but something tells me....

Very true that. Very true. Players often get compared to singers and that, like they are in the "entertainment" industry, so are worth the cash. Difference is, singers can continue to earn substantial cash for years and years off royalties/touring/re-releases.

The month after they retire, that is it for a player. Zippo.

All well and good and I'm sure your maths are correct, but he could well have spent it all you know. Nice house, fancy cars, hobbies, bad business ventures, agents fees, swindled by his agent. Your being a bit simplistic don't you think?

Just found this interview with Gareth in the Telegraph back in January:-

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...eam-of-England-recall-for-2014-World-Cup.html

“Every now and again I've a think about the four fantastic years, winning the league and the FA Cup, playing amongst fantastic players, but I have to keep looking forward. That’s obviously Everton.’’

He’s quite a relaxed individual, spending his time away from football playing golf or being with his family. “I like going down to London for a couple of days but it’s a place where I’d never fancy living; too busy, too lively, people on top of you. I live in the middle of fields. My wife is massively into horses. She events. In terms of looking for houses, we're restricted! It’s school, stables and don’t worry about me!’’

Sounds to me like the Barry's are well settled where they are, I reckon he's more than likely on a golf course somewhere sunny chilling with his mates, all this chat in the papers at the moment is just speculation, I think he will sign.

More quotes from that article:-

“Everton fans don’t just come to watch the football. They are there for Everton, the club. They really believe in the history of the club. It's drilled through their families, through the years, about Everton. When I see them they say: ‘You’d better be signing next season!’ Every time! My answer is the same every time: ‘Hopefully! Hopefully!’ That’s a genuine answer."

“From day one, the manager said: ‘I’m not going to put any pressure on you throughout the season, we’ll have the conversation in the summer, see how the club feel about you, see how you feel about the club and take it from there.’ I’m more than halfway through the season now and it couldn’t have gone any better. It’s going to be a nice conversation to be having come the end of the season.’’
