It'd be bizarre if Everton ended up having to pay £2.5m to sign an out of contract player.

Why on earth would that have happened?
I would. He would be a great signing for free on a year or 2 contract but it sounds like that wouldn't be the case. He's going to be on the decline anyway so I'm more interested in who we can get to fill the role long term.I'd give him an ultimatum if I was the club, make your mind up on the deal in the next 48 hours or do one.
Honestly think if this deal was going to happen it would have by now. Barry is looking for the longest and most expensive contract he can get so he's in no rush. I think we should forget about him, can honestly see him signing on a long term big deal somewhere and just plodding along picking up a wage. He's got nothing left to play for really and can see him being one of those players who signs a new deal and takes his foot of the pedal
Not sure this 2m thing is true, if it is, once again shocking negotiations by Everton
Why do people keep thinking this should have been done by now?

Barry is clearly worth £2m, City paid half the lads wages or more on the proviso that we'd pay £2m if we were to sign him this Summer. Basically City's way of getting a bit back if we took him long term. Hardly 'shocking negotiations'.
Why people are so negative all the time is beyond me.
