Won’t lie, never met anybody who was openly gay in my industry, construction.

What about that lad from the Village People, who wore the hard hat and rigger boots ?

Mind you, he did knock around with some strange lads, a motorcycle cop, a man dressed all in leather, with a massive muzzy, a sailor and and an Apache.

He probably drank in Smokie Mo`s too.

On average based on studies, only about 5% of the population are homosexual. The chances of you meeting these people in your workplace are already very low. Secondly, there probably is a great deal of homophobia in your workplace which most likely means they won't get accepted. The more masculine an industry/workforce is, such as construction in your case, the tolerance for homosexuality is always going to be lower.

How can there be only 5% when we’re discussing people who keep it a secret.

Why wouldn't they may i ask?
Footballers themselves tend to be homophobic. Evra once said that most of his West Ham teammates were homophobic. Rakitic once said that "gays are not allowed in the changing room".

Think of it this way, playing professional football involves using locker rooms and sometimes seeing intimate parts of somebody. A footballer, who likely has homophobic attitudes, would be far less comfortable sharing a locker room with a known homosexual. The homosexual footballer would never be able to fit in ever.

To share some context, you tend to get footballers "coming out" in countries like USA or Australia because football happens to be a rich middle-class sport and sometimes seen as "feminine" in these countries. In Europe, footballers come from machismo working-class backgrounds.
