Homophobia comes in many forms. Some people are passively homophobic. Some people are actively homophobic. It's all about context. Many people are pro-LGBTQ rights in general but when it comes to personally sharing a locker room, shower or a room, it becomes a different ball game and they are much less likely to be happy. Football as a profession involves a lot of intimate activities such as showering, sharing rooms and sharing a locker room.

It's a bit similar to many white people in the UK/USA being very much anti-racism and standing against racism, but if daughter marries black, all hell breaks loose and it turns sour.
