Gerard Deulofeu - Once a Blue, always a Blue

Good article, and that's exactly why he's at Everton. He needs games and he needs to have the crap kicked out of him by the Stokes of this world to realise that trying a Maradona every time isn't going to cut it at the top levels of the game.

He's a stunning talent obviously, but if he puts it together with a much better level of decision making then he's going to be a goal a game in the bank guaranteed.

Scary thing is that at Everton right now we're watching three players who are going to be right up there with the best in the world in Lukaku, Deulofeu and Barkley - but at the moment, Deulofeu's overall game isn't a patch on the other two, and that's why he's on the bench whilst the other two are automatic starters. He should be looking around him and realising that.

You can see why his overall game is lacking somewhat when generally Barcas front three really have free roam a lot of the time.... But they have that luxury because the whole team are so amaze balls..... So If he always thought he would be good enough to be one of those front three, than I guess he never thought he needed to worry to much about those other aspects most footballers need to play the team game...

Absolutely right there Tubey. I remember a couple of years ago hoping Barkley would be the next Rooney-esque exciting player. Now we have three to watch all season long!

...albeit the next Drogba, Gerrard and Ronaldo.

hes very similar to ronaldo when he first came to england but even MORE skilful but with it more selfish  second half of the season is gonna be v interesting, i reckon we will get him for another season too

cant wait to see him against red sh1te, particularly if he is up against enrique!

Fair play mate and I get why I'm getting the hate on this because I hate him too.

I just think the way he fights to win a ball back if he loses it, the way he surges forward with no fear and the fact he shoots from anyway is reminiscent of Gerrard.

No hate from me, mate! Being compared to Gerrard is an honour for Barkley, regardless of how much of a tit he is.

I do definitely see the similarities, like what you've just mentioned, but I think he's got that poise and dribbling ability that is a level above what Gerrard offered.

Cheers mate. They were describing him as a cross between Gerrard and Gascoigne on MNF last night so I guess that covers it!

What you described is reminiscent of a lot of great players . I don't think it has to do with Gerrard being a Kopite, just that there are better comparisons.... For me I don't see anything especially Gerrard about him...

Do you not see the similarities in their style of play? I'm not the first person on here to say it. Difference being that Barkley seems a good lad and not a ******** of course.

There's similarities in how he drives with the ball and is willing to shoot from range, but that's where the similarities begin and end for me - for the record, I believe Gerrard did both of those things better than Barkley ever will, but I believe Barkley will develop to be the far superior overall footballer.

Gerrard had sensational long range passing and box to box ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck from deep - I don't think Barkley has those two assets. What Barkley does has intricate first touch control, a vastly superior short to mid range passing game, great upper body balance and rapid changes of pace in possession.

I think Barkley is the much more rounded player in terms of ability when compared to Gerrard, and that's why the more apt comparison is in the form of continental players. Zidane is a good one because he has the same upright posture, presence and position.

I don't think he'll be quite as good as Zidane (doubt anyone ever will be again really) but he'll be close, and certainly one of the very best this country has produced.

Still though, it's a Deulofeu thread and all

EDIT: Just read the above, definitely not saying comparisons with Gerrard are wrong because he's a Kopite! I'm a massive admirer of Gerrard's talents over the years; it's just that I think the comparison is... lazy really, for the above reasons.

When Gerrard was Barkley's age he could barely move without pulling up injured and looked like Bambi on ice half the time.

Barkley is way ahead of him in terms of development at this stage.
