I bet Unai Emery feels a right wally.
Remember the Guardian interview where he said this

“He has incredible qualities, but also a lot of deficits. He can do one vs one but.. playing with team-mates, in a big stadium, it's complicated. He isn't mature enough yet and needs spirit of sacrifice". “I told him: there's players like Iborra, Carriço or Vitolo who would like to have a contract like yours, people with less talent but more hunger. They know how difficult it is to reach this level". "When he gets experience, he will grow up and I hope he understands what I told him. If it's not here, then elsewhere".

In his interview last night Martinez praised Gerard for all the things that Emery said he lacked.

Wonder how much of the improvement is because of Martinez's different management technique (more carrot, less stick), Gerard's own maturity or Emery's tough love ensuring the message got across. Combination of all three probably.

Not sure it's been mentioned yet but his attitude to defending has improved beyond recognition. Three times last night it was clearly noticeable he now appreciates his role isn't just about attacking when he withdrew back to cover a marauding Coleman run. He's always had the ability to beat players at will and create chances but what was holding him back in his first spell was his willingness to work for the team, now with age and experience it's all coming together and he's starting to look a brilliant all round player.

....I noticed a few times he chased down central defenders who received the ball from the keeper and on one occasion he chased somebody across the width of the pitch.

Need to keep him wrapped up in cotton wool, notice Martinez takes him off early in matches. Totally agree with him. Last thing we need is his precious hamstrings to go like last time.

I really hope we can hold onto him, keep Barca away. Could see Del developing into a
Ronaldo with his play.

Cynically, I think there will be horse trading with Barca in the summer along the lines of "We'll not buy back Del for the 9m euros that we're entitled to if you let us have Stones for euros 40m" or something like that

Hopefully he will rub off on Barkley.
