Get Rooney before United

I'm actually really dissapointed in how Wayne Rooney's career panned out. When he first burst onto the scene and until he went to Man Utd, he was absolutely sensational. I remember in Euro 2004.. He would have single handedly won the tournament for England if only he didn't get injured in the quarter final. We should be right now and over the years should have been talking about Wayne in the same sentence as Messi and Ronaldo. I blame Alex Ferguson for ruining Wayne. Instead of allowing Wayne to play with freedom and just be natural.. Ferguson instead played him as a donkey.. Doing all the donkey work. In fact I remember Ferguson misusing Rooney to mark and close down Makelele whenever Makelele got the ball. What the hell was that about?

I don't recall Maradona, Cruyff, Del Piero, Messi and Ronaldo being used as donkeys
Yeah despite all he achieved in the game I don't think he completely fulfilled his early potential.

Rather than blame Ferguson, though, I think most of it was down to Wayne and his lifestyle. Imagine when he signed for United and turned up for training; at school, at Everton, even with England, he'd always been the best player, the one the others would look at with awe. And there at United there's this kid Ronaldo who is every bit as good, if not better. I wonder what went through Wayne's mind when he realised that. And then one of them was totally dedicated, doing extra training sessions, while the other went out on the p*** with Darron Gibson and Phil Bardsley.

There is literally no doubt in my mind ronaldo is so much better than Rooney.

There is no argument

So we agree, he had no interest in becoming an Everton legend has a player, which is what I stated. Never said he made the wrong decision; he did what was right for him, just like Cenk Tosun is doing by fleecing our club ;)

I’m pretty sure it’s not his fault, generally, Everton were daft enough to offer him a deal, and he was daft enough to sign it.

I think the issue is much bigger than the player.

If Everton were run properly we wouldn’t be talking about Cenk Tosun.

His peak in terms of excitement was Euro 2004. Once he joined United he was no longer required to take on entire teams by himself, he became a much better overall player but he lost the greedy/flair aspect of his game (shooting aside).

2004 Euros was such a good time, having some Everton teenager take centre stage and being able to brag about him being one of our own... I was so naive I didn't even consider that him blowing up on the European stage might lead to him leaving. He's one of us etc etc. Think him leaving was the last time I ever got truly angry about anything football related

I can’t understand any scouse Evertonian wanting to leave their club at 18 for Man Utd instead of helping Everton be successful mate.
Absolutely spot on mate.
Said the same thing at the time. Proper Evertonians would never have done that. Don’t really class him as a blue myself. Well not like me anyway

I wouldn't either mate, and I don't think (and have never thought) Rooney is a particularly nice fella. But that's probably what took him to the very top.

His comments are a bit odd, but hes one of Uniteds greatest ever players.

I dont hold any anger to him anymore, but honestly hes not an Everton legend and never will be.

He never was. He’s an United legend who just so happened to come through our academy. That’s all he is to us.

He only left because Everton wanted to sell him, I thought everybody knew that?

Or is this just bait I’ve just taken?

Once a fat manc....

Never understood the forgiveness this money grabber who jumped ship from his supposed boyhood club before he had really established himself and only come back the other yr because United wanted rid
