Goats squad analysis thread 2023/24

We're in big trouble here aren't we.
GK
Pickford Virginia Lonergan Crellin
Def
Patterson Young Coleman Keane Tarkowski Branthwaite Mykolenko Godfrey
Mid
Onana Alli Gueye Doucoure Garner Gomes Onyango McNeil Harrison Danjuma
Fwd
Cal-Lewin Beto Chermiti Dobbin

Bolded up names I think who's time is up in May. In retrospect I've no idea why Chermiti was signed, and Beto for £25Million due this coming summer is not looking good value (when Lukaku for instance has a £37 Million release clause no idea remainder of contract)
The club has had to cut squad members and it seems the coffers are empty for the foreseeable. Next season if we are still a PL outfit the squad loses what it does, is another 12 months older and will end up topped up by a couple of loans.
On a catastrophic way of looking at it, say Branthwaite and Doucoure get sold for big prices (man utd the former and somewhere saudi the latter) to help balance the accounts. 4 keepers. Coleman retires as does Young and Jarrad goes. Holgate comes back. 6 Defenders. 5 Midfielders. 4 Forwards. 21 players total. The Beto fee to find. And a couple or three loan places to try to make cover.

It's a bit of a mess isn't it. Any there don't seem to be a lot of lifelines available.

Is it possible that the car salesmen shifting Branthwaite and Onana might get their way? Maybe flog Pickford as well?
3 keepers.
5 defenders.
5 midfielders.
4 attackers.

17 man squad total. All monies into the hands of our creditors. This season could be a day dream compared to next year if we survive.

I think my problem with the entire squad is that we can’t make a decent team out of it. It is all misfits and make dos

I think the right back situation sums everything up.

If this was Brentford or Brighton then Patterson would be playing every week given his age and potential regardless of him making errors here and there.

He's hardly played a game since September. He's currently behind in the pecking order a 38 year old, a 35 year old and a CB in the pecking order.

Young has played enough for the year's option to be triggered for another 12 months you suspect and Godfrey will have another 12 months to run so right back looks like it will remain a complete mismash in terms of another long term coherent strategy until summer 2025.

My issue with the potential squad for next season is how old and uninspiring it potentially looks in key areas if you take out Onana and Branthwaite.

Young will be 39 in July and in midfield you have Gana 35 in September (not sure if he has a year's option) and Doucs in his 30s so not ideal to have core of team past 30 in positions which require energy and freshness.

So many average squad players still with 12 months to go on their deals so feels like they'll all hang around which will limit ability to get in as many new players as required. Also had very few injuries this season compared to most other prem sides, might not be that fortunate next year.

Next season players + ages at season start.

GK: Pickford (30) / Virginia (24)
LB: Mykolenko (25)
LCB: Branthwaite (22)
RCB: Tarkowski (31)
RB: Patterson (22) / Godfrey (26)
LM: McNeil (24) / Dobbin (21)
DM: Onana (23)
CM: Garner (23)
RM:
ACM: Doucoure (31)
CF: Chermiti (20)

Average age: 24.76

Keane - Sell
Holgate - Sell
Coleman- Contract ends
Young - Contract ends
Gomes - Contract ends
Gana - Contract ends
Dele - Contract ends
Danjuma - Contract ends
Harrison - Contract ends
DCL - Sell
Maupay - Sell
Beto - Sell

We would need:
1 × LB/CB
1 × DM/CM
1× RW/ACM
1× CF

Squad size of 17 so would need to pad it out as well. Quality over quantity.

Zat are you trying to relegate us by keeping only 13 players from this season (including our backup keeper, Dobbin and Chermiti)

The budget is tight, so my focus would be on strengthening the wing with pace and the midfield with creativity. We do well in defense mostly.

I see either Onana or/and Branthwaite leaving us, this will and probably must happen to give us some funds to improve the squads. So there is a replacement for one of them needed. Both linked with 80m offers.

Danjuma and Harrison (hopefully no 20 mio waste) will leave us, means we need 2 wingers.

Dele and Gomes leave us so we need 1-2 creative players to play either deep lying playmaker or in the Doucoure role.

Myb someone for RB, as unsure future with Coleman/Young.

Questionable:

Gueye, only keep him as back up for another season if huge pay cut (on 130k atm). Tendency let go, then need a DM.

Sell:

Maupay
Holgate

Jesus Christ.

Zat here just casually dropping the squad size to 13 like it aint no thing to replace half a squad with the 70million we get from the sales he listed.

IF we sold all those players, we would need

1 GK
1 LB
2 CB
1 DM
2 CM
2 RM
1 ACM
2 CF

For a squad of 25.

So thats 12 players needed.

Anyone wanting to keep more players would need to explain why?

We dont need a squad of 25. A squad of 20 would be enough.

In fact its better to have a smaller squad with Dyche. Forces him to play certain players and not his favourites.

Less numbers / higher quality.

£70mil for these 4:
× LB/CB
1 × DM/CM
1× RW/ACM
1× CF

Plus 3 loans & wed be saving a packet on wages.

lol

We need to name a squad of 20 every week for Premier League games.

And besides, Onana and Branners are highly unlikely to be named in our squad in September.

Firstly Brighton wouldn't have paid big money for Nathan in the first place and more likely had he gone there it would have been a quiet deal, small fee, and he'd have been able to develop slowly in the shadows as he needs. Instead he's a big ticket purchase without the skills yet to play in the Prem. Such is the opinion of those that watch him day in day out. Its a shame but he needs game time on loan at a lower level in order to progress.
