Goats squad analysis thread 2023/24

Lingard, no thanks. Moyes is debating about giving him a short term contract. West Ham named their squad for Europe and he wasn't on it. I know Moyes hummed and harred and thought a bit longer about signing a player. What did he offer Notts Forest last year? You reckon Dyche could get a tune out of him?

I doubt we are actually in the market for free transfers. So what have we got:

GK
Pickford
Virginia
Lonegeran (lol)

No comments - happy enough

RB
Patterson
Coleman

Patterson's poor start doesn't bode well here but at this point I think it's just worth trying to develop him

LB
Mykolenko
Young

Many will disagree but I would start Mykolenko once he's fully up to speed. Young is a handy enough utility man but should be no more than that. A big area of concern for me, though.

CB
Tarkowski
Branthwaite
Keane
Godfrey

We only need 4, but the quality drop off after the starting pair is frightening. Also, though his start has been good, you would think Branthwaite will have a dip in form at some point. And I really, really, really, do not want to see either of Keane or Godfrey come in. Probably the area I'm most worried about, we have to address this in Jan.

CM
Gueye
Doucoure
Onana
Garner
Onyango
Gomes (lol)

I think the first 4 are all individually decent options, just not sure how they compliment each other best in a midfield 3 though. Hoping Dyche sorts them out, as if we find the right balance, this could be our strongest area. If not, we'll have to see if there are any smart loans or cheap options in Jan to balance us out a bit more.

LW / RW
Danjuma
McNeil
Harrison
Dobbin

Very frustrating we couldn't get another through the door, as I don't think Dobbin is ready, despite showing some positive signs. What I will say though is at least they're all different profiles so we have options.

CF
Beto
DCL
Chermitti

Crazy that we actually have a striker now. My only concern here is they all seem to be a similar profile of striker. I actually **prepares to be shot dead**, wouldn't have minded seeing Maupay retained. He's very much a support striker, that said who knows how often we will go two up top, and Danjuma is also an option. On the bright side, Beto looks the business, good hold up, link up, drives at players and looks dangerous in the air. If DCL can stay fit, CF oddly becomes our strongest area.

What we need in order of priority:
  1. CB to give competition to Tarkowski and Branthwaite and keep Keane and Godfrey far away from the 11
  2. Creative midfielder
  3. Back up full back better than Young
  4. Actual sitting midfielder to protect the back line
  5. Support striker

Fair enough summary, but people are gonna change their opinions regarding the Keepers if Pickford ever misses a game, let me tell you that.

Beto is the only player it would bother me if we sold.
Aside from Pickford there is no other player that couldn’t be easily replaced Relatively cheaply, can’t think of anyone else that is above average.

Plus a new Board of Directors with a new owner to get such replacements -

As much as I’d have loved a few more in, when comparing squad depth side by side with what finished last season there’s actually been really big progress made overall. Unless I’m missing players I struggled to even get two options per position using last years squad, and two of the first 11 were injured almost all the time. We still have pretty ropey backup options but it’s hard to deny we’re much better off now than before:

I actually think Onana or Garner could be a six if given that responsibility the problem with Dyche's set up is the other two midfielders push very high and the 6 is isolated when that 6 is Gana he likes to hunt the ball too so it's often emptied. I would try Onana sitting flanked by Gana and Garner with Doucoure rotating in and out of the team with either one as an 8, he scores goals but not enough to be given a free role.

Re the squad we have strengthened up front and weakened at the back. Our wing options are thin. Our Centre backs aren't reliable beyond the first choice and our left back can't do a full season. So for me those three areas need addressing also some creativity in midfield. We will probably be in the more and having to use our loan slots in January.

Forgive this here, but it's a place to think...

Walcott - resell - zero
Tosun - resell - zero
Sigurrdsson - resell - zero
Gbamin - resell - zero
Mina - resell - zero

Who else has cost us money to sign then eventually walked on a free?

Speaking of tempting fate, in a bit Demz.

Numbers wise the squad is almost perfect, but thats just in terms of quantity and assumes everybody is "fit".

Id like to see Gomes punted today.

Can put Onyango in instead, not because he may be any good...just because Gomes' wages are so high and hes bad.
