Good Luck Tony Bellew!

I love the way he advertises himself as an Evertonian in all the media coverage, everything surrounding him is the colour blue and he always wears the Everton crest on his clothing on TV. So whatever you think of him as a person if you are a Blue you can't help but want him to do well.

This fight may a step too far but fair play to him for giving it a go.

I know theres already a boxing thread but i believe this event needs one of its own.

Bellew is one of our own, a scouser, a massive blue comming from humble begginings. He wasnt a star for the majority of his career but continued to push himself and get himself out there (even if it was not to everyones taste, he will admit that himself, but needed to in order to gain much needed attention).

If you had said 4 years ago he would be where he is at now, no one would have believed it, probably not even himself.

Out of sheer self belief and determintion, he has molded himself into one of the biggest current stars in british boxing, on the verge of arguably the single greatest win of a british fighter on these shores.

A proper example to all these kids out there today that whatever you circumstances you can make something of yourself.

He could be forgiven to take an easy money fight after everything hes done recently, but he goes in against a fighter thats won it all and looked unbelievable in doing so reaching his prime.

Tony bellew the fat kid from wavetree whos had a season ticket nearly his whole life, british, comonwealth, european and world champion, goes one last time daring to be great.

WAR BOMBER!!!!!
I agree with most of that apart from the bit about the greatest win by a british boxer on these shores it would not be in the top 10 in my opinion but well said with the rest.

Fair enough, out of interest id like to see your top 10.

Honeygan v Curry stands out obviously.

Fury v Klitschko
Stracey v Napoles
Hatton v Tzsyu

Id say a bellew win would be at the same level of all of them.

I think that is the scale of upset we are talking about if bellew could somehow win. It's the fight I had in my head earlier when thinking about what a huge ask it is

Calzaghe v Hopkins - no where near as big a win, Hopkins a all time great but wasnt exactly unbeatable, not long off the back of two losses from Taylor.

Benn v mccellan - a very good win, but i wouldnt have mccellan anywhere near the pedigree and calliber of Usyk. Mccellan was more of a feared recking ball (comparisons with Lacy when he fought Clazaghe, albiet being a much better fighter than Lacy).

Lewis v Klitschko - Very good win, i wouldnt put it on the scale of this though. It looks better in hindsight than it was at the time.

Laing v Duran - Brilliant win.

Lewis v Holyfied - again a brilliant win, however this was a cruiserweight world champion going up to fight the heavyweight world champion, id rank bellew over Usky above.

Khan V Greko - best win of all time, nevermind british. Just pips Frazier v Ali.

Were talking about a win here over a former amature sensation who has wins in 340 of his 353 amature fights spanning over heavyweight to super heavyweight. Winning european, world and olympic medals as an AM and then making a seemless transition to the pros sweeping aside everyone on rpute to becoming an undisputed cruiserweight champion in 15 fights, only the second person to ever do so.

WAR BOMBER!!!!!

I’ve loved watching his career, at times I never thought I’d see him win a title . after the disappointment of the first cleverly fight and watching the destruction by Stevenson I thought his ship had sailed . Tony’s attitude and desire pulled him through , through a rematch where he avenged that cleverly defeat taking him apart in the last couple of rounds and I know the crowd loved that . All leading to one of the greatest sporting nights it’s been my pleasure to be at and where else but goodison . if you weren’t there you missed out because it was as special as anything I’ve ever seen and any blue who couldn’t get emotional not just at him coming out there to z cars , the gasp as he got knocked down but to him after the fight and the ‘I am Everton ‘shout.

I loved the Haye build up with not just bellew but Scousers getting under Haye’s skin and the weigh in photos of tony holding in his stomach next to haye’s incredible physique , the place full of Scousers . everybody had written him off and everyone having taken Haye’s advice and backed our man to make that win even more special . The raw emotion after his own terrible loss following the Haye rematch was also really moving .

Leading to this , it won’t be easy but we’ve learned not to write bellew off . I certainly won’t back against him but it’s going to be incredibly difficult.

If he can so I do think it’s one of the biggest shocks around British boxing . The others have been listed but it’d be up there with honeyghan and as others have said Hatton and Laing . I heard somebody mention that ken Buchanan winning was a huge shock as well and reading accounts it certainly seems to have been.

Let’s be honest not many outside our city are giving bellew an earthly so it’s to his credit he’s taken this fight , as always taking the hard route but if he pulls it off he’s hitting legendary status and I believe that . However to most blues an Evertonian who comes out to z cars , never stops talking about Everton , has the badge on his shorts , does his fitness work at finch farm and won a world title at Goodison should probably already be there .
