Generally when asked this question by a friend, the appropriate response is to slap them hard across the face so that they can come to their senses (y)

Makes sense for some people Madd. Too many piss poor trainers with no real background in anything have devalued the whole thing like.

I've been slowly getting back into the gym over the last couple of weeks after about 3 months off it. I'm weak as [Poor language removed] but I've still got a bit of muscle left fortunately. I hate that I'm so uncommitted.

I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but my experience of people I know who are personal trainers are that they are piss poor.

Example (thank goodness they don't read this thread!):
I know two lads who are personal trainers, both are clueless but are tall good looking and that seems to be enough. It's like the blind leading the blind.
I know an ex figure competitor who is a peronsal trainer, she is totally clueless. The advise she's given some people and had to be corrected by some of the guys in the gym is shocking. She's had people doing a pre competition diet for weight loss, when the people don't even lift weights! Not to mention they weren't on the drugs she was on. She's advised guys against core work because it will 'thicken' their waist. A girl who would train her shoulders for four weeks before a comp and no more, who never trained hard a day in her life, and advises clients against squatting....... she actually doesn't know how to squat which is why she does it, because she can't teach them the movement.
I can think of three other examples that are equally as shocking, typical fitness/ figure competitors (women).
And I even know a pro bodybuilder (IFBB) who doesn't know much about training either, he was coached and told what to take and do by other people. Now he just rehashes the advice with no idea why it was given and sells gear. Genetically he is a freak, total super responder. The running commentary in the gym though is that if he actually could train properly, and train hard, he'd be much much better than he is.

I personally just think that the personal trainers out there do a little course, and possibly have good intentions, but are unfortunately taking peoples money when they know about as much as the average joe would after flicking through a copy of mens health

I'm sure some of the cross fit trainers are okish. Personally though I'd look for a weightlifting coach, as in clean and jerk/ snatch, you're more likely to get top level advice and training from them. Even if you have no interest in the Oly lifts. Powerlifting can be hit and miss, although there are some very knowledgeable guys. Bodybuilders, more hit than miss, although for diet and gear advice they are very very good.

With the fitness stuff, find a competitive runner/ cyclist/ tri athlete. They'll know about how to cycle your training for the best results.

For general fitness, as in health, you really don't need to do that much though.

Yeah, there is one PT I have seen just then on twitter in Liverpool. has a Christmas offer on now, 10 lessons for 100quid. He does the likes of Duffy and McAleny.

Looks decent like, I'd rather go with someone who looks in shape rather than someone who isn't and charges 30quid

No mate, I agree. I was a trainer myself for years. Used to work with a fella who put people on every machine in the f=gym for five sets to 'muscle build'. Lads where in there for three hours a night not putting an ounce on.

I always found the trainers who know diet inside out get the best results for people. That was the angle I took. You don't really need to do anything radical with the majority of people you come across. Get the diet right and everything else falls into place.

He's just their mate ste. think they're just doing him a favour. They've got access to S&C bods with backgrounds in elite performance that will have years of knowledge in the bank.

Not saying the lads not good, I don't know him, just saying.

Got a point there. Just seen he charges 20 for a meal plan. You can go online and get them for free ffs.

Unfortunately that's part of the trickery though mate, lots of people who look like they are in shape are just genetically gifted. It doesn't actually mean they know what they are doing.

Contrast that with one of the top strength coaches in the world, who'd you'd just think was a grumpy old man. The head Russian powerlifting coach looked like he'd never been anywhere near a gym!

Just had a little nose at the guy on the twitter link, probably more of a chance of him knowing what he's doing from the types of training he's listing. He's more likely to have done some reading and experimented first hand with what works and doesn't etc.

The main thing you want from a trainer is someone who knows how to coach technique, and someone who knows how to train you for your specific goals. Knowing how to train someone will also necessitate you knowing how to change things up if what they're doing isn't working, and that doesn't mean changing from four sets to five, or mixing some exercises about because it's a different movement.

You know where I'm coming from at least

I stand corrected :-)

You'd be surprised how many pay that, and a shed load more for eating plans!!
