So I'm wanting to start getting into some shape.

I haven't done ANY exercise for god knows how long - I'm talking many many years! Having said that, I do swim in the summer - just not strokes, playing in the pool with the kids. I walk a lot and I do mean a lot. It's just that my heart never really gets a work out!

So with that in mind, any suggestions?? I ran about .75 of a mile on Thursday in some terrible effort to try and motivate myself to do something.

I don't like running - my legs hurt the next couple of days. I don't like going to a gym to workout....so any suggestions? I do have my garage I could move a TV into and get a DVD going or something....just not really sure where to start?? Treadmills?

Your legs hurt after running ? If you don't mind me asking, how heavy are you ?

You mentioned swimming but messing around with the kids in the pool is a lot different than actually swimming laps. I would really suggest doing something like actually going swimming. Its a great workout and targets all the body. Swimming will be your form of cardio and i would suggest buying a small set of dumbells...20lb... and a couple of resistance bands. There is many apps out there for fitness and some actually show you specifically how to do the exercises and where on the body they target.

Resistance training 3 nights a week and some swimming is a good start. Your diet is a good 75% to a healthier lifestyle though.

Patience and attitude is a must though for getting yourself fit again.

0.75 miles is a start, mate! That's the most important thing. Personally i recommend trying to find something that fits in with your lifestyle and that you enjoy doing. Otherwise if you don't enjoy it you just won't keep it going. Can you a few miles of cycling in a day? Or a run? Sometimes I actually go for a quick lunchtime jog at work because its a great way to de-stress and unmuddle one's mind.

There is a huge amount you can do in a pool, do some running in there and its good resistance training and hurts the joints less.
Use it to build up your muscle endurance and go for a run once a week then over time build up the amount of time you spend running out of the pool.

Just finished 5 a side a broken man, I'm just nowhere near the player I used to be, and I was gash then ffs. Still, enjoyed the workout thoroughly, few more weeks then it'll be good fun.

You sound like some of the lads I play with; they're crap too.

All jokes aside mate, I played tonight too and the bleedin' German dicks I play with... must be a German thing as they bitch and whine about absolutely everything. I'm proper worked up about it.

Been running regularly for a month now, I've lost almost a stone in weight and a jeans size lol..... Anyway, I'm back to running/walking up the mountain near me every other day.... It's an absolute killer running up but levels out about 2/3 of the way up where you can run in a circle just below the final climb to the top..... It's a cracking workout with some fantastic views..it took me 41 mins up and down today so I now have a target to beat and I can monitor my progress.

Went and played actual footie for the first time since september. The 5km runs i had done last week really helped, did 2hours no problems aside from massive blisters. The new Coach played Football for NZ in a World Cup and hes pretty good. Going to bump my running up to 7km later this week.

Nothing worse than blisters when you're running and walking.

Is that an All Black team then ?
