Was having this conversation today with my boss about cyclists wearing lycra. Unless you're training to compete, is there any need for all in one lycra? I can understand lycra shorts for comfort, but is there any need for the full whack?

There is never ever, ever, any NEED for it if you are an overweight middle-aged male.

Yep i want this answering too. Ive had a convo or three in recent months about this also......

Women of the forum, come forward, you're needed. Im not getting the full lycra attire..... Does the lycra look do anything for you women, like heels and stockings do for a guy.

It's performance clothing I guess. The shorts are essential as you have padding in them, which protects your bits from extended spells on the saddle.

The ensemble is also a snug fit, so is good from an aerodynamic perspective, and is a god send when it's hot, but can also be good in the cold as you can add layers accordingly. Arm warmers for instance tend to be rolled down for the climb, but rolled up for the descent.

The bandana/sweat band is purely optional like, but I wouldn't cycle without one (in matching colours to my kit of course)

The Italian ladies were drooling like.

Im not into the whole ' i can do this and i can do that malarkey '....

Surely its about appearance or is that just me like

No I'm the same. I've neglected legs for a while though, partly because my old gym had about 3 machines for legs and no barbells at all. My legs aren't skinny, just not that strong. I just don't want to look like an idiot when I'm wearing shorts.

Well my legs are pathetically weak. I'm not even going to say how I could squat, or more how much I couldn't squat.

Very easy to build your squat in a relatively short time mate. Pop me a vid of you squatting, just so I can make sure if I give you something to do you won't hurt your self

Pretty much almost everyone has it in them to squat three plates a side, shouldn't take more than six months too.

Thanks mate, I'm going to make sure I get a good leg session in every week now so hopefully I will. And I will do that, thanks! I've not got a camera phone at the moment (I know, LOL) so I'll either have to get my mate to film me who goes at different times to me or wait until my new one arrives.

If you want strong legs, squat three to four times a week. You can squat daily if you build up to it and know what you're doing

Depending on your body weight, you should be able to slap a good 10-30kg on your squat in a month if you've not done any volume work before.
