Don't do crossfit lads, it promotes awful form. It's an ego sport which has the ability to cause serious damage.

Poor deadlift form with arching of the back, you'll snap your hamstrings with those stupid box jumps and end up with a serious injury

as I said, its all to do with the coach and their approach

I'm lucky enough to have a world champion olympic weightlifter doing the coaching and programming!
a rare thing in Ireland!

I've got a friend up in the Lakes and he said what fantastic weather you had for the ride. Was as close to perfect as you could get. What gearing did you have (out of interest)?
Apparently the Fred was glorious last year as well. Might be a reckoning next year.
I was on weird gearing as I don't have a proper road bike, so did it on my 1x10 CX bike. 38 oval upfront and then a 12-34 cassette - so I had the opposite problem to everyone else in that my low gears were fine, but I had no top end. This was quite noticeable as some descents were very steep and it would have been nice to have kept the momentum rolling.
Found the descents no problem tbh - reckon Phil Liggett was right all these years and mountain biking does actually equip you with some road skills.

Need to sort myself out with a road bike - just done a mountain time trial tonight over saddleworth moor which I had to do on my time trial bike. Some proper fast descents and it felt a bit wobbly at times.

That 34 tooth must have been handy on the climbs though :D Some proper steep buggers up there. From the sounds of it the locals got into it as well and gave some good support to people on the way round, which is always nice.

Yeah support was fantastic, really felt like an event.
It's been taken over now by human race, which has caused a lot of grumbling amongst the old timers - won't be the same etc. Big commercial operation doesn't feel right for the Fred, but I guess is sort of inevitable when you're talking about 2000 riders, plus Hardknott and Wrynose were closed to traffic this year which is quite a big deal to arrange. Must be a massive thing to organise if you're just doing it in your spare time.

Aye, I've heard it's moved over to Human Race. I've never done the Fred before, but do have a sense that events are better when the organisers have a strong connection with their local community. Fingers crossed they retain that, as the Fred is quite probably the best sportive in the UK.

My back and neck are a bit iffy from a couple of car accidents so I might give it a miss unless I can find somewhere with a good reputation.

Aren't they all franchises so it's just down to who's coaching the place? Know a couple of people who've done great with crossfit, including one proper couch potato-to-physical beast transformation, so it definitely works for some. It seems to inspire a certain level of indoctrination, like a cult, but if that is what it takes for some folk - there are worse things in life to be obsessed about.

The coaches at mine were giving me form tips throughout, and have a good reputation. No doubt there's some poor ones around, but that's the nature of franchises and I wouldn't generalise against crossfit because of it.

At the end of the day you'd get the same results from doing a HIIT session using giant sets and 1 rep max moves by closely monitoring your load.

I like DUP training myself, basic moves and steadily increasing the volume to increase mass, and you won't pay for the pleasure.
