Socks can make a big difference too ( as mad as it sounds ! ).

Have a look at :

Hilly.

Ininji.

They`re tailor made for trail / fell running, so the areas of your foot that take a pounding are cushioned, which combined with a good shoe makes a massive difference.

They aren`t cheap, but worth investing in a few pairs.

Don`t be put off by how weird the Iniji socks look, as they`re very very good.

I bought myself a pair of Hyoptik Comression Socks after suffering from what I thought was Shin Splints. They worked well in that they were comfy and didn't cause any rubbing or blisters. However the shin splints would stay for the first 1 - 2km they dissipate before coming back again later in the evening. It wasn't until I wore a pair of my old running schools one night that the pain went away. After a bit of working out, it was the pair of Adidas trainers I had for everyday use that were causing me issues.

For Parkruns etc I just use standard running socks from Decathalon/Sports Direct.

I guarantee that if you swap your cheapo Sports Direct socks for decent purpose built trail socks, you`ll notice a massive difference in not only comfort but your times too, as if your comfortable you run quicker.

Trail running and road running are as different as mountain biking and road biking, yet many people seem to think that wearing the same gear will work for both > you end up injured.

I only use the cheap socks for Parkruns ;)

Good advice though.

...not sure what i’ve stumbled into here, the Kenyans win Olympic gold after running thousands of miles training in their bare feet. Man up, it’s your lungs and legs that facilitate running power not fancy trainers and socks.

However they don`t run uphill and downhill for miles, barefoot in thick mud, where you have next to no footing.

Kindly shut up x

Brooks are excellent shoes.

Inov8 are very good too - massive range and a shoe for every surface / condition.

Plus they do a standard ( wide ) fit and a precision ( narrow ) fit.

They are also incredibly light, which makes a big difference when running on mud - less effort.

Salomon are also excellent, but tend to be used by the more serious runners.

Ive been Orienteering for 40 years using studded, waterproof shoes which have changed considerably in this time. When I was younger I just used to bash through them , tear them to bits! Now I don’t orienteer that often, am more sedate ,go for good cushioning and they last me years. A quick look in the garage and I’ve got three pairs on the go. My Walsh PBs resurfaced last year and are maybe 20 years old bought in the days when I did Hill Running, from the Bolton based family firm , Classics in their day!. The Nike Pegasus Trail I have are fine with good cushioning and support. Last , and perhaps most interesting is a pair of Karrimor D30 trail shoes bought for £25 from Sports Direct ( Eeek !! , I know!) . They’ve absolutely ruined the quality of the original Karrimor brand, but these shoes have lasted surprisingly well , give good grip , good cushioning and haven’t fallen apart ....yet.

Agree with you that Innov8 are very good, and if you’re serious about these things the extra price is worth it for the confidence and surefootedness they give you.

I represented the army at athletics. Hard training. Played football at a decent level 'till I was 40, also hard training. Played golf up to age 79 (must admit no hard training or practise)lol 'Socks' were never an issue, we can't even be talking 'margins' here, surely?

With trail running in the Winter, your feet can spend nearly every minute of your run ( which can be for hours ) soaked in muddy water.

Your feet swell too, so your socks play a massive part in protecting your feet from chafing / rubbing, plus the little bits of grit that get into your shoes via the water ( I didn`t believe this until I bought a couple of decent tailor made pairs ).

There really is no other sport like it for punishing your feet.

I would wear wellies, me.
