I’ve got 3 pairs of shoes, all very good quality and newish :

Heavy ground.

Medium ground.

Hard ground.

They’re all cushioned appropriate to the ground I’ll be running on that day.

By a process of elimination, the minimalist heavy ground shoes are the ones that cause the least pain.

It could be the shape ( like a slipper with lugs ) and the fact that the ground is muddy etc which provides natural cushioning.

My left foot is madly shaped - two hammer toes and a partially collapsed arch ( I’ve had a gait analysis done in the past ) so it’s very hit and miss with shoes.

Some are okay and some cripple me almost instantly upon use.

I’ve booked in with the sports physio who did my gait analysis tomorrow to try and moves things on.

It’s very frustrating, as it’s stopping me from increasing my mileage.

Go to a podiastrist, get some custom orthotics then find a shoe that fits them (I use Glycerin 15s for training). They'll help push your big toe downwards and your other toes up.

I’m gonna do mine on the bike; years of football has rendered treadmills painful on my joints.

Or do hill reps up Hardknott :-) Having said that, maybe grinding up a hill at a super low cadence isn't the best thing for your joints either. Hill climb (ie UK hill climbs) are quite something. Usually only a few minutes but they're so hard they usually have a bloke at the top to stop people falling over. From experience, it's incredibly hard to do multiple reps at maximum effort, even with 10 minutes or so rest. Very hard.

I`ve had a 3D gait analysis done and a pair of " phits " orthotic insoles custom made as part of the service ( not cheap ) . The thing is they`ve made the pain much worse and the sports physio who is looking after me, is currently trying to solve the problem by " re jigging " the orthotic insoles.

I`ve got a very oddly shaped left foot, which is the real problem and he`s trying to " design around " my foot.

He said that I`ve got one of the weirdest shaped left feet he`s ever seen !!

Had a good time trial at the weekend - after the mud and grime of the cyclocross season it was like walking round a Ferrari showroom. Absolutely pristeen bikes and kit on display - posted a long 23 which is decent for me all told as it was a slow, windy day and it's very early doors, pre-season really.

It was hard, mind. You know when you're looking forward to some sort of sporting event because you remember all the great things but have forgotten the bad things? Second half of the ride had me pure gasping and was very much remind me why I'm doing this again? Kept it together but fair to say the psychological edge was not yet there.

It's weird how our mind does that isn't it? Pretty much any hard event you get to the end feeling absolutely dreadful and pledging never to do it again, but you always come back for more.

It’s as much your mental strength as well as your physical strength with the endurance stuff, as you always reach a point where you’re brain starts telling your body to stop.

You have almost have to “ train “ your brain to accept it and get on with it.

In saying that, I honestly don’t know how anyone can train their brain to overcome the last man standing, unlimited mileage ultras !

Finished an 8 x 5km Forest Trail race series last month and am now entered into a batch of 5km/5mile/10km races. I've been running up to 8 miles with my running club on their social Sunday runs. A few of them are Half Marathon training so its been more encouragement from my point of view to them.

Well, one picked up an injury this week with the Half Marathon on Saturday in Larne. I've taken their place. So this will be my second ever Half Marathon with my first being in 2014. What have I done? lol

Looking forward to it as I'm not planning to be running for a PB. Just running at a pace that I know I'm not draining myself at quickly.

Stick to your usual pace and you`ll be fine mate.

The fact that you can already run 8 miles means that you`ll be able to push your self on for the extra five miles that comes with the half marathon.

A lot of runners get carried away at events and set off way too fast. It`s almost like they want to look good to everyone at the starting line.

The problem with that, as you probably know, is that it just completely wrecks your rythm for the whole race and can cause you to blow out.

The rule of thumb for the non serious event runner, is that your starting pace should be comfortable enough to hold a conversation.

Also, if you go off too fast, you can`t enjoy the glorious scenery that comes with most trail events ;)

Ps - as you’ll be almost doubling your usual mileage, your shoes will make a big difference as well, depending on the ground you’ll be running on ;

Hard packed, soft, muddy etc.

Inov8 - do shoes for every surface and most come in two width fittings :

Standard - loads of room in the toe box.

Precision- more of a snug fit.

I run on the precision fit, as I like my shoes to be “ tight “ on me, but it depends whether you’ve got wide feet.

The X Talon 212 are probably the best all rounders / most popular.

Light and like running in slippers !

The Half Marathon is a Road Race so I'm using my Brooks Adrenaline 18 GTS. I've got a pair of Mizuno Wave Ultimas for Trail as they are much more cushioned. A lot of runners fail to see the importance of a really good st of trainers. But, if you like F1, you can see the big difference that changing the contact point between the power and the surface makes. And if you are confident in your running shoes then its one less bit of negativity in your head.

Cheers @COYBL25, I'll let you know how I get on.

I run in Adrenaline 18gts at 1/2 m and above, gone through a number of variations over the years , often buying last years model in the sale .
One thing mate, you mentioned you’ve taken another runners place. I’m not sure of the details but this is something to be cautious about , and may be something frowned upon by the organisers , there have been instances of people becoming ill in races and organisers not having correct details for them available . It’s currently quite a controversial topic in running circles, swapping numbers that is.

The Ultimas aren`t trail shoes are they ?

The Hoka One Speed Goat 2 are very similar if you like cushioning for the trail , plus they have quite a rugged sole too. ( expensive though )

I prefer much more minimalist shoes, but it really is down to the individual.

Some 71 year old bloke (who recently finished radiation therapy) set the world record for planking at 38 minutes. 38 bloody minutes!
