Guardiola to be found out in the premier league

Leicester did it for a whole season and won the title...

We did it against Citeh, 4-0

Swansea yesterday. 3-2

If what you say is to be correct, Barcelona should have won EVERYTHING they entered for the last few years, given their possession game. They did not. And there's a reason for that. Majority possession does not equate to winning ways. Period.
Leicester was a one off in that they won't repeat the title win with that team.

I didn't suggest for one minute that dominating possession means you will win everything I said that GENERALLY, teams which have more of the ball finish higher. And that is undoubtedly true

Of course you get on off matches where a team with less possession will win. And even one off seasons like Leicester but they are the exception

I don't have stats to hand but I would be willin to bet that Ferguson's Utd teams, Paisley's Liverpool teams, Wenger's Arsenal teams, and of course Kendall's Everton teams had more of the ball than the majority of teams they beat.

I understand that people are sick of the word itself due to some the media and certain managers obssessing over it
However the expression 'possession' is just part of the vogue in modern football. But back in the 70s when I started watching football They would talk about 'having more of the ball'. Exactly the same thing just a different way of putting it but back then we didn't have a statistical analysis.
And yes back then teams who didn't have as much of the ball would win games and even trophies. Just not as often.

Bringing this forward to the week-end games, Citeh had more possession, but couldn't beat Spurs (notwithstanding the non-award of a penalty to them, but Citeh's first was 'handball'). Equally, the RS had far more possession than Swansea, but were less potent in front of goal. These Managers like Guardiola, Klopp & Martinez need to wake up to the fact that 1) the modern game is NOT all about possession (a lot of possession is tippy-tapping in their own half); 2) statistics PROVE nothing in terms of results; 3) defending is every bit a part of the game as possession & attacking, 4) Leicester City were the template for the modern game last season, with their possession sometimes being under 30%, yet they were lethal in front of goal.

Conte at Chelsea has got it right at the moment with not giving possession away cheaply allied to quality players who can attack quickly, pass accurately, and score regularly.

I remember Jose commenting once, when he was at Madrid, that he didn't mind "losing" the possession stat in a game because he reckoned most goals came about because a player in possession of the ball makes a mistake ergo the more possession a team has the more likliehood they will make a mistake which leads to a goal against it.

So if a team stays in the dressing room and refuses to play........

The team that scores more goals wins.......just saying !!

Seriously though of course the better team will have more of the ball and have more shots. It stands to reason. I think what irritates people is the recent fetish for possession almost for its own sake as a indicator of some kind of purity or "betterness"

Same with the long passes. What on earth is wrong with a long pass? They're a hell of a lot more difficult than crab like passes across midfield. Colin Harvey was arguably the best passer in our history. He played numerous long passes....when the time was right.

Ditto Kevin Sheedy.

Beckham's big balls were a thing of beauty.

"His record at Bayern is comparable to Ancelotti's" - hmmm...that's such a wrong post on so many levels I can only take it to be deliberate trolling

He's bought a goalkeeper that hasn't saved a shot for 180 minutes because he's dead good at pinging it out to the full backs. Conte is 10x the manager he is.
He's not perfect, of course he's not.
Worryingly though, quite a few don't rate a manager who's won absolutely everything there is to win.

As people have pointed out though, Steve Claridge would have won everything with the greatest club side ever to play the game. I'd go as far as saying this job is his first real test as a manager. We'll just have to see how he pans out.
