2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Comparison I keep making.

We would not want Cahill play making, not his game.

He needs to be surrounded by passing midfielders. I said it when we signed him.

Cahill needed Arteta, Pienaar and Osman.

Problem seems to be we are asking GS to be a player he isn't.

Which is why we struggle to create. He's a passenger expecting others to create/work for him when he's in a position to supposedly do just that. And when it's not working, he may as well not be playing.

The commentary kept saying "They need to do more to get Siggurdson in the game". You can't pass to someone who you can't pass to. Which led to Gana trying to break lines with passes which he's not good at doing

To me that's the most frustrating part of the team. You wouldn't miss him long term.

Not sure you can really say he expects others to work for him; puts the most effort in on the pitch.
I can't fault him for closing down and pressing, but there's more to it than that. I think it's a valid point to say that he doesn't do enough to get himself involved. Let's be honest, Gana and Schneiderlin would absolutely love to play the easy ball 9/10 times, and yet it seems we can't get the ball to him. So why on earth is he not regularly the easy ball for them? Because he's not trying to be.

Aimlessly jogging about and “covering ground” is not working hard for the team. He’s never in the game, his jogging about contributes nothing. This is why football is not a stats game and you need to just watch what’s unfolding.

I do watch and I’m not going off his numbers. He does work hard, always puts a defensive shift in as well. I think he’s a good player and often gets into good positions.

As in feed him the ball around the box. He had this problem last season as he never dropped back or asked for the ball, never takes pressure off the midfield. Never starts plays from the middle of the park.

If that's not his job or he can't so that, we need a proper number 10 who wants the ball. Not someone who chips in with the off toey

Bingo.

Leave the space. Make for an easy pass. Then pick a pass.

No. You have Gana and Morgan trying to ping 30 yard balls or feed strikers.

Mate, he's not a number ten, he's getting shoehorned into the team because of how much he cost.

You disagree, that's fine, but I'm not chatting wham. Silva has always played a 4-3-3 formation, yet plays a 4-2-3-1 here all to try and accommodate Sigurdsson because he can't play centre mid.

Gomes will replace him in time if he can get up to speed and he's a much better fit for how Silva wants to play football.

Sigurdsson is more of a Tim Cahill type player, but we all seem to think he's a playmaker and play him like one.

Never the same as Cahill. Cahill led by example. He turned up when we needed him. He didnt hide or float around doing nothing. And for the record, I know that Sigurdsson has more ability than Cahill ever had. That's the most frustrating part.

Sigurdsson is an absolute nothing player. He doesn't have enough impact on games. He doesn't get involved enough. He doesn't demand or show for the ball. He doesn't even have a position. Last year it wasn't his fault because he was out wide, not his position, he's a 10. Now he's not a 10. And he's certainly not a striker or centre mid or defensive mid, so what is he?

I wouldn't mind if he didn't have a position but his performances demanded he played every game. He is simply a passenger. A very expensive, average passenger.

See, I'm frustrated because I still believe he's one of the most talented players we've had in a generation. He dragged Swansea out of the mess they were in a couple of seasons back and has been incredible for Iceland. I'll hold my hands up through, I'm not tactically smart enough to know what needs to happen to get the best out of him now. Maybe somebody who is will have ideas on how we can? For me, looking to go wide all of the time probably doesn't help and him needing service from the two behind him isn't great either.

But he just isn’t. He’s around Leon Osman’s level in his prime.

Sigurdsson should never be mentioned in the same breath as Tim Cahill.
