2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

He hasn't scored a free kick for us yet, get the winner with one on Sunday please

2 seasons ago it was either Lukaku scores or we don’t score.

Now we have Richarlison driving forward, Sig getting goals, even Walcott gets himself interesting dangerous positions. Once Sig starts cracking free kicks into the top corner and Mina starts banging headers in we’re leaving.

That's the thing though, he never once "Hit his stride" last year. The few worldies he scored helped paper over that.

He has hit his stride this season during/after the Fulham game, and long may it continue.

He played well in those months, people just didn't admit it. I have stood by this all along.

He was never excellent, bar the odd performance (West Ham home, Swansea home, Newcastle away off the top of my head), but overall was very consistent.

He's showing what he's about this season but the basics - the hard yards, the intricate passing play, good crosses etc - were still there last year, he didn't forget how to do them. He was just playing in a side devoid of confidence or attacking impetus much of the time.

I genuinely don't think he was, and it wasn't for lack of me wanting him to be good, I can tell you that.

A lot of the same people who say he was excellent last year, criticise Rooney, and realistically, Rooney offered much more last season. You even use West Ham as an example. Rooney ran that game and played brilliantly. Then there's the whole "He was played out of position" argument. For some reason, that was never used an excuse for Rooney.

I'm glad he's playing well now, and he's getting to a level now where I am beginning to trust he will do something, give us an edge, be a difference maker, and that's exactly what I expected of him when we signed him, especially for that amount of money, whether that's his fault or not.

But last year, he was often a passenger who popped up with the odd piece of ridiculousness out of nowhere. Very much in the mold of Bilyaletdinov, but with a harder work rate.

This season, since the penalty miss against Fulham, he has been a different player altogether. Maybe that miss was his low point and in a strange way, maybe it calmed his nerves and allowed him to stop trying so hard and focus on doing what he does best. And like i said earlier, long may it continue.

Doubted him last season and the beginning of this one when our midfield wasn't clicking but he's paying back what he invested him. Consistently helping us to 3 points, putting in the performances and being an actual goal threat.

Honestly wouldn't care if we won by an own goal or an offside hand ball but it wouldn't get much better than a free kick from Sigurdsson

I thought he was poor to start with last season but I felt his form improved with Rooneys decline before his injury. I even had some doubts this season but I think it’s no coincidence that the arrival of Bernard and Gomes has elevated his game to another level. Hes looking fitter faster but Gomes has the knack of finding him in space which we haven’t had before.

I still don't think he was worth the money but I do believe he is currently the most important player in the team. Richarlison, Gueye and Gomes run him close but at the minute he is the first name on the sheet. Keep this form up and we have a 50/50 chance of top 6 and a very slim chance of top 4.

When it comes to ‘worth the money’ I personally think it’s not so straight forward. There’s definitely better players in the league who have cost less. But we paid what we had to pay to get him. He’s showing he can be an effective part of the team when we play well or play badly. He is definitely a player who can make something from nothing. We paid what we did because we could afford it. So for me personally, he’s worth every penny.

For me, we only looked decent last year when we had Rooney deeper with Gylfi ahead of him (nominally in a wide left role because he was needed there to protect Martina).

I liked Rooney for us last year, overall, and i didn't buy into the argument that they couldn't play together.

But at points last year Gylfi was very good. He was consistently one of our best performers for three months prior to his injury. In his first few months here i agree entirely he wasn't up to scratch, but there are other factors in play for that.

Anyway, it's going over old arguments. He's currently boss and I just think people still seem to expect him to be this all-round player that he never has been. He won't run a game, but he'll be involved when it matters.

He's definitely gonna net tomorrow!

Be ready for tomorrow Siggy. If your pre-match rituals involve listening to a tonne of Björk, then do it mate!
