Siggy is a bit of a throwback player IMO. Has something in his locker, a moment of magic or great technique but he's not an all rounder. I'd say whenever we have played him out of his preferred 10 position he has struggled, and in that sense he better suits a team who actually have less of the ball, so they can sit back and soak up pressure and then rely on him to pull something out of the bag from the few chances they engineer a game. In our more possession based game he struggles to dictate play - he's great at an instinctive through ball but not as good with more controlled passing in general play, and for someone as technically good as him he rarely takes the ball on the half turn as Eriksen, Coutinho, Silva or Ozil do. He's in the same bracket as Walcott for me, a good but not great Premier League player who isn't going to take us to the next level and who is very good at a few specialist things but could actually hold back the team from developing a new style of play. That being said he can be a useful squad player for a couple of seasons more, but I imagine he will be sidelined pretty quickly when the midfield revamp begins in earnest.

He can score 25 goals, if they’re all scored in draws or defeats, its not really helping.

I just want midfielders who get on the ball & dictate play. Not one that just sticks a leg out at everything.

IMHO, our whole performance is being stifled by him.
If they are scored in draws they are helping.
And he has scored important goals in wins too..
When are lookman, gomes, gana, Bernard, davies goin to chip in with an important goal.

Cahill was similar in the fact that he was apparently a midfielder but really he was a second striker , he’s scoring more than Cahill did in a season and he’s also a lot better on the ball, he works just as hard and is capable of scoring from upto 30 yards out. EVERYONE loved Cahill and I’m one of them , I don’t get the hate for siggy and the only reasons I can see for it is that he doesn’t score in the derby’s like Cahill and he cost 30x more .

True. He was. Never had the technical ability to play as a midfielder. He'd always play off a striker and had an absolute salmon of a leap.

Siggy is supposed to create though. Cahill wasn't judged on that.

I think Siggy has had a great half a season. But now has reverted to type more, ghosting in and out of games.

Like a lot of positions, having someone challenge his place would be a good shout when he's out of form.

I’d just play 4-4-2 and have him as the second striker with a free role. I also think lookman Bernard could play there too... Walcott could even be useful as one of two strikers if he could finish , I know it’s an old school formation but with the players we have now and our inability to pass through midfield having two targets up top would actually suit us better at this moment in time imo

He's the footballing version of Brexit - there's almost no point discussing him because each side is looking at different things.

For me, he's bordering on useless - a luxury player akin to James McFadden who bottles it when the going gets rough. For others, he'd walk into most teams in the league and we should worship the ground he walks on.

Minds aren't going to be changed - when he leaves, people will bemoan wasted talent or rejoice at getting rid of waste of space - there's no middle ground.

Or it's just accepting that he has definite limitations and definite strengths.

He's our top scorer. I'd hate to think where we'd be without his 'useless' contributions.

Then again, at the moment he isn't playing well enough to demand a starting place and if we need to drop him to change the system, so be it.

We'd have a different playmaker in and probably be better off for it overall.
