2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

I still don’t think he’s as good as some are making out. He closed down well, found some decent forward passes and nearly set up Walcott as well as putting a few decent balls in. It’s hardly even Arteta level tbh were he was running the whole game for us and it’s still miles off the level of the top players in his position like Eriksen Hazard Ozil Silva etc. Ok he had a decent game. There’s no over reaction like a GOT Siggurdson over reaction though. Even on the highlights there’s a load of misplaced passes and opportunities lost through being a bit slow.

Mate, none of those players are like Gylfi - or should I say Gyfli isn't like any of those players.

He's most similar to Eriksen out of all of them (albeit not as good).

Silva is a wizard. Hardly any like him in world football. Hazard doesn't run games and neither does Ozil. To an extent, Eriksen doesn't really. He's more about getting the ball in the final third than dictating the play.

Gylfi has never been that player. You keep seeming to think he is, which for such a smart poster is strange, and you have done for a year purely because of the fee paid.

He won't run a game. What he will do is be a really dangerous player in the final third and pressing high up the pitch. He will create things with sharp passing on the edge of the area and good link up play, and then of course his set-pieces.

In the first half he frustrated me at times because his passing was a bit off. In the second half it was on point and we looked really good - we should have scored two goals (one of them was wrongly disallowed) that he played a crucial part in.

He is never going to be a midfield maestro like Arteta in his pomp, or a silky playmaker like Silva.

But he's good at what he did on Saturday and in the right system that's pivotal. We would have had far less success pressing them if he'd not been in the team.

Don’t see Bernard being rotated with Walcott because Walcott gives us loads of pace down the right, and along with Richarlison he’s our biggest threat. I could see Sigurdsson maybe being rotated with Bernard.

perhaps.

injuries and suspentions will play a part.

I read that Bernard can play 10 or either side of the 10..

gylfi is much more potent as a 10 and not suited to left or right side as we saw last season.

so with that being said, Walcott is the likely rotater with Bernard, unless rico hits bad form or is injured.

eitherway what a lovely set of players we now have at our disposal

Theres plenty of room for everyone to play. Its not a matter of their being 1 starting 11 for the entire season. You can rotate 7 players in 5 spots, and they each get 33 games on average. Thats plenty to keep everyone happy. Siggy can play where he is now, drop in further, or move out wide if need be on certain matches. Gomes is the least likely to rotate, but hes also only a loanee. Bernard can play across several positions.

And there WILL be injuries. Finally we have some depth where we go "its a shame this very talented player cant fit in our 11".

The over exaggeration is marvellous. His biggest problem is consistency, so let’s see if he can keep it up

His biggest problem isn't consistency. He's very consistent.

He was poor in his first 10 games for us last season. From November onwards he was extremely consistent until his injury in March.

You’ve just said that Hazard Ozil and Eriksen don’t run games and said that Gylfi doesnt ether but that they are completely different players? I agree with you they are different in that the others go past players, run the attacks of their teams and lay on chance after chance in open ply as well as dropping deeper to dictate play when needed. Gylfi seems to be ok at pressing (but not that good because he’s not as quick as a Kante or even a mad dog like Henderson), he seems to be ok at creating chances, and he looks like he offers an ok goal threat. For me this is the Fellaini argument all over again, yeah he did ok at number 10 but none of the top teams would have a player of that profile at 10 and I think it’s the same with Siggurdson. In isolation he’s ok but at times a turgid Southampton team put us under pressure easily and we seemed to squander possession so easily in the final third.
