..Switzerland 6 Iceland 0. Not a happy birthday.
Fair point, I don't KNOW that there is no place in a 4-3-3 for Gylfi.
However, I strongly suspect that this is the case, because:
1) he won't get in as either of the wide men in the front 3 (we have Bernard, Richarlison, Walcott and, for now at least, Lookman to play in those two wide spots) because he doesn't have the pace necessary.
2) He's not getting a start as the CF either. He's simply not a striker.
3) I haven't seen anything in his performances for Iceland, Swansea, Sputs or us that suggests he can perform as a deep-lying playmaker or a box to box midfielder, so where would he go in the 3 man midfield?
Look, I like Gylfi. He seems like a decent, responsible pro and I am totally convinced that he is one of the most technically proficient players in the Prem. He's a national captain. There's a lot to like about him. BUT he lacks the top-end speed and athleticism to be able to perform in some of the midfield and wide attacking positions. Like it or not, the prem places a heavy demand on players' physical abilities. This assessment is what makes me think that we overpaid for him, and this assessment is what makes me think he works in a 4-2-3-1 (as the 10) and/or a 4-1-4-1 (as on of the two inside men in the advanced line of 4) really well..... but in a 4-3-3? I have strong doubts.
Hope I'm wrong. Nothing would make me happier than being able to look back in six or seven years and say "Blimey, Gylfi was an absolutely top signing and worth every single penny."
He`s obviously taken his early season good form onto the International stage lol
The Swiss are pretty good so the result is no huge surprise.
And they've got Shaqiri.......
He is a good player but not sure he will fit the system long term. Is under more pressure because if a price tag he didn't choose. If we bought him for 20-25 million no one would be complaining unfortunately we were held to ransom by Swansea and ended up paying a massive premium.
To [Poor language removed] right lad. We have some horrid fans.
Well said sir. Just one question though: Is it really only in hindsight that you came to the conclusion we overpaid? My take on it is that we should have walked away when the fee was revealed to be more than £30m. As you rightly say, no-one else was showing an interest in him.Just reading this thread for the first time and I agree with you mate - he’s now part of the squad and not many could say his purchase wouldn’t improve us on what we had at the time - he was our big target last year based on what he’d shown over different seasons in this league - a match winner on his day with his goals and assists. Did we overpay? Of course we did in hindsight. Not his fault, my gripe over it was that it too long to do the deal if we wanted him that much.
He isn’t a winger but we stuck him out wide last year in a side that couldn’t give him the ball often enough, high up in the pitch to create. He isn’t Richarlison, Walcott or perhaps Lookman...he is an intelligent footballer alright but he rarely grabs a game on his own and dominates it. He needs the ball in positions that he can deliver a telling ball or shoot....we knew that when we bought him. Doesn’t have the pace to beat many fullbacks so dont ask him to do that. Haven’t seen him play deep; not sure that’s his game either. His price tag reflected the market at the time with a relegated club seeking the best price. Not sure there was a big queue behind us though.
We’ve changed managers since, he has a part to play, will get lots of minutes before the next window. Over to him now in my book to see whether he goes down as a decent player or a mistake. It is what it is. Seen flashes that show us the ability is there..needs to show the desire and consistency now. As usual, up to the player and what he does on the pitch and in track ning. If he proves to be enough he see his contract through with an option as a reward, if not, he’ll go (at a loss).

Supposedly he can only play when he has boss players round him Eggs, so we can't really judge him till he's playing for Real Madrid or Barca.
..I actually like him. When you watch him closely in games it’s amazing how often he gets in really threatening goalscoring positions. More often than not the ball doesn’t come near him, but it takes some willpower in a team that rarely creates.
