2019/20 Gylfi Sigurdsson

I’m amazed arguably the most gifted player and best striker of the ball in the squad is being questioned as to whether he should be in the 11. Some of you lot must watch games with a blindfold on. Probably same lot who think Tom Davies is good enough.
Nobody is saying he isn't a good player but he can't play every week though can he? When he's on it he's good but when he's not he's invisible and to me that means our system is wrong or he isn't inconsistent. Either way we need a plan b this 4231 stuff is boring and creates very few chances with our shape becoming odd and our forwards having to drop back. We need him deeper or at least affecting the game more because it's currently like having a luxury player that effects the whole team functioning. If not we try 433 with Sig as one of the three midfielders and our forwards pushed right up like the RS/City do or if we must play 4321 maybe Bernard or Iwobi can be tried centrally at times. Sig is still a big player for us but this formation doesn't always benefit the team.

What's funny about this thread is its on 11 page now, Siggy was crap yesterday and Richarlison was crap, our two leading scorers from last season, but this thread has 11 pages of nonsense not the Brazilian's.
They both missed good chances Richchalitons shot that flashed past the post in the 2nd half - he would have buried that last season both looked out of sorts...

Because as our number 10 we have a reliance on him to bring others into play, and put balls through to our forwards - which we’ve seen that he can do as good as almost anyone in the league.

That reliance on Sigurdsson increased even more once Gomes went off as Gbamin and Schneiderlin are defensive mids who don’t provide that same attacking impetus.

I personally think that the number one flaw in the game yesterday was that he was rarely getting on the ball, coming deep or making space so he can do his playmaking. The fact that this has more pages that the Richarlison thread suggest many others also think that.

Think Silva should be sorting it out, we were largely impotent in possession and he should have had Sigurdsson playing deeper to help with that, especially after Gomes came off.

He's not and never has been a playmaker. He doesn't even play 'as a 10' in the classic view of what a number 10 does. I don't even get the impression that Silva asks him to do that. Why do people expect this of him?

Compare and contrast with Eriksen yesterday. He got on the ball left, right and centre, deep and advanced; probing for the right pass and dictating the game. That's not Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson is someone who can find an assist with a single neat pass, read the game really well, link up play with one-off passes or clever movement, and score goals. It's a whole lot different from what someone like Eriksen does.
