2019/20 Gylfi Sigurdsson

That's the thing.

Richarlison does a lot of good things but he does some bad things too but seems above criticism.

Siggy is the same but get's slaughtered because he's not a 'hipster' player.

I just don't get why Siggy, our most productive player is getting so much stick when ...

Pickford makes mistakes because he's over confident.

Coleman can't cross.

Keane takes half an hour to turn.

Mina is wreckless.

Richarlison hogs the ball.

Morgs is useless.

Bernard can't shoot and isn't productive enough.

DCL can't shoot to save his life.

Siggy is arguably our best player and is a team player, yet seems to get more stick than other players who have even more glaring weaknesses.

I'm not sure what reality some people are living in.

Nail on the head. With the team being over reliant Siggy it is obvious the fans are also over reliant. They know what he can do but if he doesn't deliver each and every game then it is he who gets the flak. Opposition teams know Siggy is probably the one to keep quiet so he has more attention on him.

Yet he does control the flow of our attacking play.

He’s just had an off game. Games can pass players by and they can still score or create a match winning chance. That’s what good players do.

You could see the disappointment in his face when he was subbed. He knows.

We’ll have to agree to disagree re whether he controls out attacking play. I think he compliments it, but he is rarely pulling the strings all match.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy and when he’s on form he’s a joy to watch, but I can understand why people get frustrated and I don’t think that saying they’re the same idiots who hated Rom (which the earlier poster did) is helpful.

So true.

I feel sorry for him.

I think he's a great player for us in certain games and moments, but we are becoming a bit predictable and over reliant on him.

We are being figured out as we are playing the same way with no real interchange and a lack of ideas from the front men.

We have a few options now - Iwobi can play the 10 and I think he will be a great player for us in that position in the future, and Bernard could maybe play the 10 as well..

We just can't rely and play Gylfi week in week out in the same position. Sometimes we are carrying him a little - especially away from home because of his lack of pace and the fact he doesn't always track back..

I agree. I really like Gylfi but we desperately need another type of player there to push him and play in certain situations.

I'm not overly concerned with him being off the mark in the first game of the season but the issues you pointed out still exist

Sigurdsson has arguably the most important role in our team given the position he plays

Here are his stats for us so far in the prem since joining 2 years ago

66 appearances, 17 goals and 9 assists

For someone who plays in such a crucial role for us is that good enough?

At Liverpool they give their front three the freedom to do whatever they want there is no 1 focal player however with us it is different most of out creativity goes through 1 player which is Sigurdsson

Now compare each individual player at Liverpool in the prem over the same period that Sigurdsson has been with us for

Salah - 75 appearances, 55 goals, 19 assists
Firmino - 72 appearances, 27 goals, 13 assists
Mane - 66 appearances, 32 goals, 8 assists

Is it time to abandon 4231 and go for the more forward thinking free flowing 433 with kean, richarlison and iwobi up top?

That is how I would like to see it but have said before Silva likes to play safe.

His first season was a disaster all round. Judging him on last season is fair and he played well. We do rely on him though but it’s obvious that Marco sees that and that’s why he wanted to bring in Iwobi, Zaha and Doucoure to make us much more flexible.

Iwobi alone does that to be fair, and I think we’ll see us chop and change a lot this season.

For me he will need to be replaced this season and we can start to play 433. We can still play a number 10 in certain games abs will have Bernard & iwobi who could do that job.

I know a number of people on here won’t agree, but I feel we are stuck playing one system when he plays. And because of his lack of pace he plays high up the pitch, basically at times becoming a 442. And forcing Richarlison deep, which hiders his game, Richarlison at times should be left up the pitch and let a midfielder worry about the opposition’s left back. In a 433 this would be possible.

Needs to be dropping deeper if he wants to influence the game.

I think it shows that he's not getting supply up the middle of the park. Can't find it now but saw numbers earlier this week showing how much of our attack goes up the flanks vs. the middle - we had one of the lowest % of attacks up the middle in the PL last year. Understandable with Digne and Coleman but I think this is why Sig has been isolated. Only until after the 17-day break did things improve- and that's when we had Gomes at his best, and also Gueye suddenly discovering some talent going forward and passing for the first time ever (probably to woo PSG).

JPG won't be as good as Gueye in the sweeper role, but I hope that with him, Delph, and/or Gomes in the middle, and Mina better on the ball than Zouma, that we'll be able to do a better job getting the ball up the middle to Sig if we stay in the 4-2-3-1.

I’m not sure he plays safe, he’s talked about 433. I think it’s more to do with his options in midfield. And we have bought 3 a d was looking to buy a 4th. So I don’t think it will be a problem moving forward.
