I think this as well, but it's probably also true of other very creative players like Ozil, and I for one would definitely take him in our team. He's not exactly what we expected or needed in the summer, but he's a genuine difference-maker and we're much more likely to score with him on the pitch than off it.
Assuming he continues to play down the left it would (hopefully will!) be interesting to see him play with a decent left-back and a stronger central midfield at some point, because our play down the left has been pretty awful all season. Having a decent LB and ball-playing central midfielder would mean he might be able to get involved in the play a bit more without needing to drift in and crowd the central areas.

Starting to contribute far more now and i've also been impressed with his effort and work rate. Weighed in with some important goals this season and assists. I think for a considerable amount of time he hasn't been good enough but I will also cut him some slack in that the team he's been playing in hasn't exactly helped his game. Next season he could be a key player for us if we get other players in during the summer to compliment his game.

Gylfi is boss, he had a slow start but he's starting to get into his stride now. Get a better player behind him or play him in the middle and I think he will be even stronger.

Going to stick up for him here. Not been great for the money I know, but paying 45mil for a player and playing him out of position is ridiculous. Once sam got the job you knew Rooney wasn’t getting dropped.
Stuck on the wing does him no favours. Also if he had a quality left back behind him IE Baines in his prime, that would make a huge difference in terms of having another attacker down his side for the opposition to worry about. While Garbutt is not the answer, him playing today I think would have helped sigurdsson imo. Having a poor technically right footer playing left back just unbalances the whole team.
But sam Obviously picks his defenders on the defensive ability first and foremost. No thought of helping the attackers out.
