2017/18 Gylfi Sigurdsson

We overpaid yes, but Gylfi has has a decent season.

Without considering the price, on the face of it he's been involved in most of the good things we have done this season.

He's got to improve, but had the rest of team/management/DoF/tea lady had such a shocking season, then we'd probably look at him as a very good acquisition.

The price skews it. We paid £45m for a player who's worth probably £30-35m in today's market, but that's not his fault.
A couple problems with your stance. He pretty much isn't going to get any better, he's 28. Players don't magically "improve" in their late 20's.

And him being involved in most of the good things we have done this season speaks more about the season than him. He's been pretty average for most of his time here.

And of course the price skews it. Bayern is getting James Rodriguez for about 3m more. You pay that money you don't say "he needs to improve".

My point was that we haven't seen the best of him because on the whole he has been played out of position in a team that has - overall - been very poor.

He hasn't had the chance to show his best in more than glimpses. That's partly down to him and partly down to the circumstances of the team and the season as a whole.

He had no pre-season and when he came in was expected to play in five different positions for 90 minutes Thursday-Sunday consistently for about six weeks. By the time he finally got to fitness, the team were in a relegation battle and didn't have a manager.

Should he not have been used to that since he spent most of the last 3 years in one? I mean, ricky ryder CONSTANTLY showed how relegation threatened Gylfi Sigurdsson was better than David Silva, Ozil and Coutinho.

It’s like the other myth mate, the reason he has been mostly gash is because we played him out of position out on the left, but for Swansea he mostly played out on the left (that came from Swansea fans) and he was supposedly boss.

Despite Gylfi being far from gash, and arguably our best/most consistent player this season.. It doesn't mean his best position is LW.

Just like Gylfi was by far Swansea's best player last season, LW is far from his best position.

How can I prove this? By looking at his passing statistics.

Gylfi averaged 27 passes per match for us this season, just like he did last season for Swansea.

Per match he loses 10-11 passes per match. That's 30% of his total passes per match lost.

While he was boss, scoring 7 goals against the Top 8 & almost setting several PL records.. He was far from his best.

He managed to create 22 goals in 38 PL apps despite being incorrectly utilized on the left.

This is how he performed as a Playmaker for Swansea in 14/15

This is how he performed as a striker for Swansea in 15/16, where he scored 11 PL goals. 9 in the 2nd half.

I’ve never seen Sigurdsson flick a switch and think “I’m going to change this game”
Then you didn't watch him against Southampton last season. Could've easily scored 3 goals & gotten 3 assists or more.

At 35 seconds he has a shot blocked, laid off a backheel pass to Olsson & then laid off a header for Leroy Fer to shoot. All in 15 seconds.

In 15 seconds last season for Swansea he did more than any Everton player has throughout an entire match.
Didn’t see Barcelona signing Sigurdsson for one hundred and ridiculous did you? Make of that what you will.
Barcelona also needed a left winger to replace Neymar, not someone in-behind the striker.

But that doesn't change the fact that Gylfi has performed at 'Coutinho's £144 mil form' level for several years.

Coutinho in 17/18: 7 goals, 6 assists in 14 apps = £144mil.

Sigurdsson:

11/12: 7 goals, 5 assists in 18 apps
14/15: 2 goals, 8 assists in 13 apps
15/16: 9 goals, 4 assists in 14 apps
16/17: 5 goals, 5 assists in 12 apps
16/17: 3 goals, 6 assists in 9 apps

Gylfi = £144mil then?

It's rather convenient of you lot to ignore his time at Swansea, when he paid £45 million based on what he did for them. Whether or not he replicates his form for us is totally up to how we utilize him, not him.

He has been class since November. The only bad game I remember from him was against West Brom in the 1-1. He also had Kenny & Martina as fullbacks and McCarthy/Schneiderlin in midfield.

Yes Gylfi was bad in that game, but who would thrive with those 4 players? Not many.

lol

He could have done with someone better to aim at. No disservice to an inexperienced DCL who was vital for us in the first half of the season

Tell that to Real Madrids number 7.
