2017/18 Gylfi Sigurdsson

He was our best player against Burnley, creating clearcut chances for Walcott & DCL. (which they both missed)

Against Watford he had Martina/Kenny as fullbacks, with himself & Walcott on the wings.

Oh yeah and Rooney/Davies in midfield with Niasse upfront. No Playmaker can thrive with those players.

Gylfi created 33% of our goals in the 33 matches he played for us this season. 12 goals/assists out of 36.

He also didn't take any penalties, which Rooney & Baines took 9 of.

Gylfi could have 20-21 of our 36 goals/assists during that period. 55.5%-58.3%

Instead we let Rooney take 7 penalties and miss 4. Rooney has created 14 of Everton's 48 goals this season. 29%

Scored 3 penalties, 3 goals in 1 game against West Ham (1 was a rebound from a missed penalty)

1 of his 3 assists was a pass to Sigurdsson where he scored out of nothing against Swansea.

That's 5 of Rooney's 14 goals/assists that were either penalties or shouldn't have counted as an assist.

Our season would have been much better if we never signed Rooney. 0 goals/assists in his previous 13 matches.

Gylfi is scheduled to return to training in 6 days, and if he does play again for us this season then I think this would be the best possible XI.

Vlasic is way more clinical than Bolasie, Walcott is lost without Sigurdsson & I cannot imagine Klaassen offering less than Rooney, Davies or Schneiderlin in attack.

Yyyeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!'

Ironically Everton have looked like they're playing with 10 men when Sigurdsson hasn't been on the pitch.

We definitely didn't deserve to win against Stoke, Joe Allen on his own was better than Davies/Rooney/Gueye combined.

Against City we had 18% possession, with Bolasie scoring a fluke goal.

38% possession against Liverpool's B team, yes we should have won with DCL, Walcott & Tosun all missing sitters. But we still looked like we were playing a man down.

Even Swansea dominated us, a fluke own goal is the only reason why we didn't lose.

Gylfi is easily our most important player. It's not even close.

There's a reason why he created 29 of Swansea's 45 goals last season in the PL, and he could have had a lot more than 'just' 64.4%
:bye:

* Where`s the diagrams ?

I’m looking forward to Sigurdsson getting back to his best next season under a competent manager.

Most clubs make their record signing the main man and play to their strengths, Everton make their record signing play out of position to accommodate an ageing, drunk hasbeen.

There is a very good chance he won't get in the team under a competent manager.

It is very hard to accomodate Gylfi in his preferred position. If the only place he can play is just off the striker, whilst not getting involved in build up play, then it puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the midfield to build up play.

He isn't good enough on the ball and doesn't get involved enough for a possession heavy team and isn't fast enough for a counter attacking team.

Hence why the entire footballing world laughed themselves silly at us spending £45m on him.

Is the right answer.

Except for the team that bid the same amount.

He played wide left for Swans and plays as a 10 for Iceland, so he can play more than one position.

Not liking the player is fine, but just making up stuff to support an argument is sad.

I'm literally responding to a post saying he needs to be played in the #10 role as he is wasted otherwise.

He can play wide left, he can play #10, he can play centre mid (which is where I think we'll see more of him). Whether he can play any of these roles well enough is another matter.

And to think that Sheedy was classed as a " luxury player " in his day.
I'd say he was.. a luxury we could afford because we had Reid, ratcliffe et al dominating the midfield. As many have said...a wand of a left foot, but he was just one of many superb cogs in a magnificent machine. Maybe gylfi isn't sheedy standard but the machine is nowhere near

‘He can play wide left’ - he has no pace and zero guile, all he does is get it, turn backwards, lay it off then float into a different area to get on the end of something. You want a bit more from a 45 Mill wide player.
Can you not say the exact same thing for "attacking mid" replacing "wide left" in your argument?

Yeah you can, I think he’s an absolute waste of money, and the argument of ‘he can play two positions’ is pointless as he plays both badly. I don’t care how much ground he runs or how many assists he had for Swansea, he’s been tosh since he joined us.

He`s a " dead ball " expert though.

Except all we do is web it out from the back :hayee:.

Possibly one of the most expensive " pointless " players we`ve ever signed.

@RickyRiders I look forward to your comments sir.

Has everyone just completely missed how quick his feet actually are in tight situations, he may not be fast but the amount of times i've seen im take oppo players out of the game at Goodison is far more than I've seen from any of our other players. I like him and back him to play well next season
