2017/18 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Cant believe the season is at an end and people are still going on about the fee, its not like we put ourselves into a debt we cant get out of too buy him.

He is a good player, but has worked until both Koeman and Sam, of course he has been poor, anyone would be under these two.

The fee is relevant and it always will be. The fee isn't his fault no, it's the fault of that fat idiot that used to manage us, but it's always going to be relevant to discussion about his performances. The reason for that being it is such an astronomical amount, that we can't possibly ever get value for money out of him.

People moaned about Rom's fee until we were essentially forced to sell. Suddenly his overpriced tag became less than half of what they expected in return.

He's grown on me as the season has gone on

Quite like him

Not a 45 million pound player, but then again he technically isn't anyway. He was only that much due to inflation, which is something he has no control over

Just can't get on board with this at all. Not every single good playmaker in the world suddenly costs £90m because of inflation, we could have had someone miles better for the price we paid. God knows when we're going to get to spend that sum of money on a single player again.

You need to stop thinking of it as 45 Million, because it really isn't

The TV money has inflated fees to insane amounts

45 Million today isn't what it was even so much as 2 years ago

I'm not sure we would have, unless we'd taken a gamble on someone

For proven quality, which he was/is, 45 Million was hardly a kings ransom in the current market

Salah cost £34m. The 3rd best player in the world cost £11m less than this painfully average mid-table PL player. There is value out there, our former manager and director of football were just too lazy/clueless to bother looking.

Which ever way you slice it 45 mil is still 45 mil. As mad as transfer fees have got that's still an astronomical amount of money and should get you a player of significantly better quality

Have to respectfully disagree. There are not many clubs that get to spend that amount on a single player, even after this "inflation". The ones that do, get top players with it. We've bought someone that no one else wanted and who has barely made an impact of any significance in a 10 year career.

Salah wasn't a guaranteed hit

He's an example of Liverpool always landing on their feet

I bet if we'd been after him in the summer people would have been falling over themselves to demand why we were spending that much money on a "Chelsea reject"

Check the Liverpool thread, plenty were lining up to have a cackle at them, thinking Salah couldn't cut it at the top level

That's not the point. The point is that Liverpool's management and scouts were smart enough to do their due diligence on transfer targets and find the perfect player to fit their system, and got him for a price that's pretty much a steal for what they've ended up with.

People laughing in that thread only proves how naïve our fans are. He was always going to do well there, although nobody could have predicted he'd be THIS good. Still, £34m for the player they were expecting was still a sensible amount at the time. £45m for Gylfi Sigurdsson was not sensible, has proven to not be sensible and never will be looked back on as sensible in the future.

Maybe, but he's pretty good. He's definitely our best player and whether you think he's a world beater or not, I'm not so sure we aren't sitting on the relegation fence if he wasn't in the side. That doesn't make him an elite player, but of the other buys we had - Keane, Klaassen, Sandro, Vlasic - he's at least had some return. Not Pickford type return, but he's had a big impact.

Poppycock, he tore serie A up last season and was always in with a chance of doing the same in this league.

45 mil should buy you a hell lot more than just 'pretty good' and I'd even argue against him being that, he's had next to no standout influence on our side. And let's have it right he's had no say whatsoever in whether we are or aren't sitting on the relegation fence, oumars had much more of a say as has Jordan Kirkland
