We weren't shy in announcing how rich we were so rather than a "relegation tax" Swansea simply played us like a fiddle as they knew we were desperate and had money, BFS has followed suit, wangled an 18 month deal after we offered 6. We have overpaid for many players that cannot be down to "relegation tax" or more TV money, sometimes you simply waste the money - we have.

45 mil should buy you a hell lot more than just 'pretty good' and I'd even argue against him being that, he's had next to no standout influence on our side. And let's have it right he's had no say whatsoever in whether we are or aren't sitting on the relegation fence, oumars had much more of a say as has Jordan Kirkland
To say he's not a standout on the side is just silly. He's literally the only offense we have some matches, especially the early ones.
But that's fine, let's talk about similar PL transfers the last year and these numbers are probably not 100% accurate, but ballpark.

Lukaku – 90M
VVD – 70M
Alexi Sanchez – 63M (equivalent)
Morata – 60M
Laporte – 59M
Aubameyang – 57M
Mendy – 52M
Lacazette – 55M
Kyle Walker – 46M
Bernardo Silva – 45M
Gylfi – 45M
Matic – 40M
Salah – 38M
Ederson – 36M
Bakalyoko – 36M
Davinson Sanchez – 36M
Oxlade-Chamberlain – 34M
Drinkwater - 34M
Lindelof – 32M
Rudiger – 32M

There are some pretty good players in there, but other than Salah, who really jumps out at you in terms of difference maker? I also don't think he's a 25M player if the Ox, Danny Drinkwater, and some of these other guys are over 30M. He's certainly better than those two.

Don't get me wrong, if the idea is to buy someone with less certainty of performance that is cheaper, I get it, but overpriced or not, you got a proven PL playmaker. There are just so few players on the planet that can just come in an completely change a side, you STILL have to have good players around them, so it's tough to say he's complete crap when his CF most of the year has been Oumar/DCL and that he's probably had to do more defending than he's ever done. Coleman and Baines haven't been in there with him most of the time and he's played minimal games with Walcott and Tosun.

But fine, call him a 35M player, and a decent one.

Did they play LCFC like a fiddle, then, too? Keep in mind, Leicster bid over 40M for him, too.

He really isn't a standout in this crap side we have, he blends in with the rest and a few of our players have had a far greater impact than he has.

As for saying the he's better than the ox lol , the ox is twice the player this feller is

We never got a proven pl playmaker, he literally had one standout season and the majority of it was a result of his stats from set pieces he's always been average from open play.

I wouldn't call him a 35 mil player or a good one. He's 25 at best and even then that's pushing it

No because Leicester never actually signed him we did. Also, I don't remember Leicester being more than vaguely interested but feel free to put me right by way of a link or something.

I honestly am so confused about why people are saying "he's been moved all over the place" or "he's been used in the wrong position".

He's been played the vast majority of his time on the left wing cutting inside. He's played that here and looked bang average. He's ALSO played a couple of times in the middle of the park here. And ALSO looked average there as well.

Where is this 'myth' that "if we played him in his RIGHT position he'd flourish" come from? This is Bilyaletdinov all over again.

Exactly

It was a unique circumstance, as it was with Gylfi

Not every transfer story is the same

Swansea set their price because they knew how bad it would be for them to lose him, and Koeman, for better or worse, decided he wanted him. At that point the price was always going to be what it was

We haven't seen the best of Sigurdsson yet, and most players would struggle to gain traction in the sort of season we've had

My advice is to put away the pitchforks and give him a chance next season

Anyone remember Fellaini? He was AWFUL when he first got here, and everyone thought we'd signed a dud, but he ended up being a great signing once he'd had time to settle in. Players can bounce back from rocky starts, it happens all the time, and I think Siggy could be one of those players

Yeah but that was Fellaini’s first season in a new league. Sigurdsson has been here for what, six or seven seasons and he’s alwwys looked the same players - few chances created, few flashy goals but pretty poor in terms of controlling and taking over a game when needed.
