The player was wanted by the club (and fans, mostly) and we were prepared to pay stupid money for him.

He's the same player with the same talent that we have yet to release. The fee was not his doing, but it is the millstone round his neck. Fans get annoyed that he did not live up to 45 million, but really we were stuck between a rock and a hard place and we paid what they demanded.

He was beginning to show his talent when he got injured.

It doesn't really matter. That entire side is built around him, so it artificially inflates what he can do when he plays for them.

The problem is even if we did the same at Everton for some reason, I don't think aiming for the ability of Iceland is the ambition for us, and I don't think he has the pace and overall game to be an elite level playmaker, given he's flopped at every chance he's had above the level of a bottom half Premier League side.

Would love to be proven wrong but at this point I think we just have to accept that we overpaid by about £25m for a squad player, and was the pinnacle of the woeful transfer policy of Walsh and Koeman.
When was the last time we had an 'elite playmaker' ? Let's see what he can do this season, under hopefully a decent manager, before we all start moaning.
Love a bit of hyperbole in the morning.

I think we can finish 5/6 this year if we just bring in 2 first team players. If we get a centre half who will tighten up our defence, an attacking midfielder. After that we need cover. If we get more players then we can expect better. I am assuming that we will buy better players than the ones we presently have, not always the case at Everton.

Mate ... unless the two first team players are messi and Ronaldo then we aren't finishing 5th or 6th with the rest of the squad the way it is

I am basing a 5/6 place finish on 2 good players coming into the starting 11, a more positive approach in our playing style and Arsenal and Chelsea, maybe Spurs all coming back towards us rather than improving. Arsenal need to arrest their slide which is not always easy to do, Chelsea look very vulnerable and hopefully Spurs will be raided by big European clubs. Then with good luck in regard to injuries we just might sneak into the top six. This period, when we aren't playing, is the time for hope.
