2024/25 Harrison Armstrong

I am hopeful that the fact that we have effectively got a four and half year contract with him means that we think he will make it and this is truly a development plan.

The issue I have is that it is a relegation fighting team and therefore mistakes won’t be viewed as natural learning

Sending out a player who has raw talent, but isn’t quite up to PL standard, out on loan to a Championship club to get valuable game time and experience that he wouldn’t get here?

Hanging’s too good.

The squad is threadbare...and in any case, before the summer - if we're safe - wouldn't;t you like the option of putting Armstrong in for a few games and see what he could do? Might save a few quid in the summer transfer window if he had.

But Moyes is completely against players from the academy getting their chance. Rooney was a very exceptional talent and that saved him from going out to the lower divisions.

I mean, sending Barkely to the Championship...

It's a method he employed with a few players. He sent Osman to Derby when he wasnt ready, then he became a mainstay. He did the same with Coleman to Blackpool. He's given opportunities to other youth that haven't taken full advantage of it, or never developed as hoped. Other youth he has put straight in, Rooney being he obvious one, and James Vaughan another. He has given youth opportunities when he can. Barkley was sent on loan to Sheff Wednesday and Leeds after Moyes sanctioned a contract extension. Both those clubs felt he wasn't ready. He returned a better player for the experience and was heavily utilised by Moyes replacement. Moyes sanctioned his professional contract extention despite him suffering a double leg break during his key development stages, such was his confidence in him.

To say Moyes doesn't give youth a chance is ridiculous, you just have to be good enough.

Seem to recall Osman, Hibbert, Rodwell, Vaughan and Anichebe getting decent chances?

Barkley went on two separate loans to the championship and didn't pull up major trees at either. Seemed very much the right decision at the time, as I recall; I think there was a little bit of revisionism on the topic once he bedded in quickly to your boy Bobby's system.

Most Everton managers have given youth much more of a chance than many other PL teams would have. I just don’t see Davies, Kenny, Calvert Lewin, Dowell, Pennington etc. getting the number of PL appearances they did here at anywhere else. Even the likes of Dobbin and Simms, would they even have PL appearances anywhere else?

The top quality like Rooney Osman Barkley Rodwell Gordon all made their way through regardless of manager.

We do seem to have quite a weird fanbase in that regard, who make up all sorts of mad scenarios where a player who spends virtually their entire career in League One would actually have been better than Messi if the manager had put him in the first team when he was 17.
