Has Phil Jagielka peaked?

Tough one tbh, with the injury at the end of last season up to him to prove it next season but deffo think stones can become better

Never known a player at the top level to look so uncomfortable on the ball. He was a great defender however age and injuries have caught up with him.

He is getting unfair stick. Italy game he was the best defender, but garry cahill at sky club chelsea got no criticism at all for that game. His marking for balotellis goal was worse than jags for suarez goal.....but Baines got the blame!!!

This is a bit of a weird thread really. I don't know 1 single Everton fan, who had any concerns about Jags' form last season. England get knocked out the World Cup, and now we're questioning whether he's good enough for us? Weird, anybody would think the op never watched us last season (no offence intended.)

...posted on the World Cup thread that FIFA have a performance index based on World Cup games and Jagielka is currently 5th in the whole world rankings. Yes 5th best player so far according to FIFA. Lets not forget, he was excellent in the first game, I think everybody is going overboard about Uruguay game. My view is that we had a back 4 totally exposed by an ineffective central midfield shield.

He's still a top CB that I'm sure any club would want in their team. He's good for at least three last ditch tackles every game. He hardly ever gets a yellow. That being said, we have to start looking at someone to pair with Stones for the long run. That's why I think Caulker and the Dutch duo rumors are so prevalent.

All of these posts have strong, relevant points. The only thing I'll add in response to the OP is this: Distin is better than Jags. Not by much, but by enough to notice. I think Jags has peaked and will start to decline noticeably in the next 18 to 24 months.

....we wait and see.

I think Jags best performances for us have always been when we're "under the cosh"great defender in those situations with blocks/last ditch tackles, however when we're on top his concentration levels seem to slip a little,I've got a feeling if we received a good offer of around 8/10 million he may go,never quite got back to the levels before that bad knee injury in 2009 IMHO.

Probably. He's still got a few years left though. Hopefully Distin will give him some of whatever he is on.

Sadly both Baines and Jags have probably had their best Everton seasons a couple of years ago
Hope you're wrong like, but I don't think they'll be first choice in a year's time, unless it's Baines filling in for Barry's position to make way for our Bry.
Both should be welcomed with open arms into our coaching set-up imo.

Hopefully plenty of games this season, so not an issue :)

he's england's best centre back atm. i agree that he's not a top level player and he would struggle at the top end of champions league, but that's not what we expected when buying him for £4m. he's still our best CB and is not really use to this comfortable on the ball stuff he's been asked to do this season, so that may be the reasoning for him looking less solid than usual, season gone by (as well as injuries of course)

he's been a success without doubt, possibly a tad past his peak though, maybe when he adapts to this new style and becomes a better player though. howard's become a better player when i thought he was finished.

As England have been the only team in the World Cup to concede any goals I think it's right that the defence gets the blame and because Jags & Baines play for Everton then they will be dropped and slagged off. FFS if We had a good defensive midfielder in front of them giving them protection then they wouldn't have been left isolated at times in particular with the telepathic Gerard & Suarez partnership, nearly as good as the Phil Neville & McManaman link.

Jags is still a good player and when he headed off the line against Italy I suppose Chris F****** Waddle criticised him for that. He was a crap player for England & always got slaughtered from the fans and in the press for being anonymous when in an England shirt now he's slagging everyone off like he was Maradona back in the 80's. I was listening to Radio 5 earlier and every journalist was after dropping Jags and Baines but what they didn't mention was the lack of protection in front of them and if you want Baines to attack then somebody has to cover for him. I actually thought that both our boys have done ok and not let anyone down but there seems to be a witch hunt and I just hope that they both make people eat their words next season. Jags will be great next season as will Baines.

He's good for Moyes football where the whole outfit is set out to defend but that risky fast break business when it breaks down exposes his positional weakness. He loses his bearings and watching him out of position for the Suarez header was far too familiar.

Good solid defender not clever with the ball who seems increasingly susceptible to injury so yeh he is under threat.

Still think he's adapted well this season - some great balls from Jag's too imo.

Some need to read the OP like, it's not a Jag's bashing thread ffs.

I know mate, whoppers, but the irony is of course, Waddle was the unjustified media-darling of the time too...perhaps at some point they start believing it too...
