Hi-Fi systems

At home I've got a Cambridge amp and a pair of Gale monitors in the living room with my 1210's and a set of old '80's Technics separates in the bedroom.

Would like to upgrade to some B&W stuff if I ever get the spare cash. I like B&W a lot.
I think it was B&W, a decade or so ago, who spent a huge amount on R&D to make some snail shaped speakers, which they sold at upwards of 30 grand. When they went to patent the design they found someone had already filed patent in the 1930s or something. I built a pair out of plaster and concrete.

How much does all this matter now everything is recorded digitally?
That's probably why it doesn't matter so much. Some bands still record in analogue, though I think. Existing digital (cd) is innately flawed at the high end which is why it always had a rep of sounding harsh. MP3 makes the situation worse, and loses a lot of info - and I don't enjoy the sound. I'm more of a convert to digital now though, especially since 24 bit has started to come on the scene, since it improves the issue at the high frequencies which made cd sound so brash.
But it still doesn't quite sound as good as an original vinyl which has been recorded on a good analogue setup, to me. Especially when you can get your hands on a half speed mastered record.

Transformer got me back into vinyl, I found the 1972 first press in the loft that I had bought yonks ago, compared it to the CD version, there was no comparison, warmer sound, more depth, what you get is what Lou Reed intended it to sound like when he recorded it.
Yep - this is my point on compression. I really don't know why they did it, other than to not stress out the majority of systems when some bozo turns it up to eleven at a party!

I really don't think anyone is recording analogue anymore, unless it's some mega hipster recording in a woodshed in Vermont.

On compression, have you ever heard an album in FLAC format? That's seriously good quality, and you really notice the breadth of sound on those recordings. Sadly it takes about 700mb for an album!

Yes - flac is awesome. You lose no detail from cd level. In fact when I record my albums at 24 bit i encode them in flac too - its my standard now, though you're right you need the space. The portable player I use uses micro sd cards, so I bought a truckload of 32Gb cards and off I went.
Shouldn't take 700Mb for an album though - a cd is only 640 - 700Mb so a flac version of that should be less?

I used to be into high-end-ish components, but not really anymore. I still have one nice solid-state 2-channel integrated amplifier made by Edge Electronics (the G3) in my living room (and a Harmon-Kardon integrated amp in my TV/Family room).

I don't have speakers to match Edge's quality, and I no longer like big and noticeable speakers; I currently use Orb Audio, which are a fabulous little company that produces amazing sound satellite/subwoofer type set-ups. Very worth tracking down if you're looking for bang-for-buck.

Currently I beam my music wirelessly from my computer to a squeezebox made by Logitech (which then interfaces with the Amp), which I can then control using a remote. So essentially, using iTunes/wireless music I loose a lot of signal, but it's convenient.

Got a Phillips midi system, very rarely use it, used to have all the tecknics seperates though. Tend to listen to music on my PC now. Although I have started buying CDs again. Got about 7 haha.

You clearly hold that Edge in high regard, keeping it on an altar like you do!

Yeah, could never really find a good place for it, but put it on a little table under a glass table in my front room. It is both inconspicuous and conspicuous. Since every other component is tiny and wireless, gone are the days of stacking up a huge tower of CD/Receiver/Amp/Phono, etc. in visible area of the room.

Tiny and wireless? Not me! These are my ammonites! (the missus hates them!)
