Horse Racing

Have to credit the BHA for the quick and positive steps they've taken to try to lock things down. Chances are racing will resume next week unless tests results next Tues show further spread. Long odds on that Cheltenham will be fine at this stage, but the industry has had a rocky last couple of weeks even before this, with most jump meetings getting canceled because of the weather.

Confirmed as American Horse Flu.

Same strain that resulted in Aus racing being suspended for 6 months!

That’s Cheltenham, Aintree and the Derby absolutely ruined this year then!

....got the Placepot up at Naas, it only paid £17 but I had it twice. Backed Emily Moon, looked for an ante-post price early this morning at Cheltenham but it wasn’t in the betting for the Mares Novice. It won by 14 lengths and is now 14-1 nrnb.

My mate has just moved here from london to manage a Ladbrokes, new mortgage etc. In one week has seen the change in gaming machines limits and now the potential of 6 months horse issues and is fearing for his job!

4 new cases found: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/horse-racing/47193751

would be surprised if they made the call to resume racing this week imo

....yep, they might err on the side of caution. I think Alice Plunkett was right on Saturday morning when she said a number of horses having flu is probably a normal situation, but in this instant they have been tested. Often a yard will be out of form and this will be the reason.

Unless this strain of flu is particularly nasty.

We also have to think about the bog standard horse owner - their horses will not have been vaccinated and they will be at risk. This strain of flu, whilst not a risk to humans, can be carried and passed on by humans.

Agreed.. Kevin Blake also made the same point that equine flu probably afflicts some yards periodically despite all the inoculation efforts. I don't know much about the logistics of running a racing yard, but I think the BHA taking a belt and braces approach is the right course of action from a PR point of view. Cancelations are par for the course during this time of year, and if we had had a snow blizzard instead of a flu outbreak then the yards would still in a similar situation.

....strangely other equine events are continuing as normal. The thoroughbred Racing population is only a small part of the total number of horses in the country.
