Horse Racing

….more horses die running around their fields than on race courses. More die in their stable than on racecourses. Horses die running on the flat.

My grandfather was a blacksmith for the Council in Liverpool after the 2ndWW when horses were more commonplace than cars. Horses dying in streets was as regular an occurrence as horses dying on farms.

Horses that run in National Hunt races live a life of luxury, they are adored by connections who own and look after them. They are treated like pets. They are bred to run, they are herd animals. Nobody feels their loss as much as connections and as much as those of us who connect with them.

Horses will die racing but more sadly they are treated better than many human beings in our modern society. Those that campaign are ignorant of the facts.
Genuine question, what percentage go straight to the glue factory when they are no longer able to race?

Jobs peoples livelihood rely on this meeting if you live in the area of aintree which I do it's so important Keep pushing all that will be left will be Tory ascot

Take it your not from Liverpool also
No - I'm about 10 minutes down the M57 from Aintree give or take a sticky protestor.

Still not sure what that has to do with the design of the Grand National though. Seriously, do you think that the meeting would suffer if they lowered and took out a few jumps and had less runners?

Or do you think the majority who pump money and therefore jobs into Aintree would lose interest? Personally I don't think the majority of punters who rock up in April are hardcore horse racing traditionalists. In fact I'd venture the vast majority couldn't tell you either the distance or the number of jumps. They'd still be more than willing to get dressed up, pissed up and throw money at it though.

There does exist a possibility that the Grand National can prosper as a much safer race. That's hardly an unreasonable stance.

Fair enough. Always difficult around a thorny subject and moreso when it's one you have a personal involvement in. My main issue (much earlier :D) is the constant talk of how those at the top end of the sport only want what's best for the horses. Like any multi-billion pound industry I'm not altogether sure that's entirely true. I'd argue there is a lot goes on that is money motivated or even worse ego related.

One of the protestors who I saw interviewed was at pains to talk about how she admires the connection between owners, trainers, riders and their horses and the whole spectacle of racing but she just felt that races like the National are very risky for no real good reason and wanted to see a better way of doing it.
