Aston Villa are holding out for 12 million pounds from Manchester United for Ron Vlaar ahead of any January move, club sources have told ESPN FC. Vlaar was one of United manager Louis van Gaal's key defenders during the 2014 World Cup with the Netherlands, and the centre-back is eager to link up with his old international boss, having already agreed personal terms on a provisional basis.

The 29-year-old's contract is up at the end of the season, when he would be available on a free transfer, but that has not necessarily helped United's hand in negotiations. Villa are aware that Van Gaal is eager to do business in January to address United's ongoing issues at the back, and that there is a paucity of top-level defenders available on the market.

We haven't had the best of starts to the league so in the spirit of "misery loves company" some fun facts about Man Utd's season to date.

United have their lowest points tally after 10 games since 1986 (when Sir Alex Ferguson was brought in)

Michael Carrick is now the 31st player used by Louis van Gaal this season and Van Gaal has used more players in 10 games than anyone else has in an entire Premier Leaguecampaign

Van Gaal has four fewer points and two fewer wins than Moyes at this stage, having spent £122million more at this stage of the season

United have failed to keep a clean sheet for the sixth PL match in a row (their worst streak since Jan - March 1997) and
United haven’t won away since April – that’s their worst run ever in the Premier League

Angel di Maria alone cost just £3m less than Southampton’s starting XI against Hull, but United trail the Saints by nine points

Saido Berahino has scored the same amount of Premier League goals this season - seven - as United's three top strikers, Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie combined

Still expect them to get 3rd place despite the bad start though.

Rooney was more devastating in Euro '04 than Gazza was in '96....and Gazza had a far better team around him.

Wayne is a better player than Gazza ever was.

wayne was in his pomp(lol at 16) gazza brought it BACK. 10 times the player wayne was / all could ever been

Radamel Falcao is having to ice his left knee following every training session and match to mitigate against further damage following the serious injury he suffered in January. With Falcao already facing a fight to regain a first-team place, the condition of his knee is bound to be a factor when the club weigh up whether to make his loan permanent next summer.

Falcao was signed by Louis van Gaal on the closing day of the transfer window in a season-long deal worth £16m to Monaco. The 28-year-old had suffered anterior cruciate damage in January, an injury that prevented him from playing in Colombia’s World Cup campaign.

It was the third severe knee injury of Falcao’s career and ruled him out for eight months. He was unable to return to action until 10 August when he scored in Monaco’s 2-1 defeat to Lorient. It is understood that since his arrival at United, Falcao’s need to apply an ice pack on his left knee following any kind of physical exertion has surprised United players over the degree of treatment required.

Their injury list looks as large as Everton's, although maybe a bit more expensive

do despite the facts basically saying how badly they have been doing this season they are going to ignore them for a few months and be the third best team in the league? lol

dont think they have much choice in if they are signing him or not. It was a promise to buy loan they got him on ala negredo in valencia. Only circumstances where he is clearly not fit enough to play for them or somehting like that gets them out of the deal.

It is probably larger tbh although a lot of it was preditable. The area where it has been most damaging is defence and Jones, Evans, Smalling and Rafael have all had extensive injury problems in the past. Not spending some of their outlay on decent backups instead of having to play academy graduates at CB or Valencia as a RB is poor management and very risky as their financial model is based on them qualifying for CL football this season.

From their OS:

Van Gaal's injury concerns for Arsenal test
Louis van Gaal could face a major selection headache for Saturday’s trip to Arsenal, with no fewer than 12 Manchester United players potentially battling injuries after the international break.

David De Gea is a doubt to face the Gunners after dislocating his finger while training with Spain ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus. The Spaniard was not sent back to the Aon Training Complex for treatment, however, which could be a positive sign for Reds supporters.

Meanwhile, the manager will definitely be without summer signing Marcos Rojo at the Emirates Stadium after he dislocated his shoulder in the Manchester derby. There are question marks over Rafael, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, while Luke Shaw could miss out after taking a knock in England’s 3-1 win over Scotland.

Midfield enforcer Daley Blind will watch from the stands after suffering what looked like a serious knee injury in Holland’s 6-0 win over Latvia and Michael Carrick is struggling for fitness after leaving the England camp with a groin problem. There were also concerns over Angel Di Maria after he took a kick to the ankle from Nani during Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Portugal at Old Trafford, while long-term absentees Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard are both still on the treatment table.

Van Gaal has fewer problems up front with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and James Wilson all passing through the break unscathed. Radamel Falcaois the only doubt, though the Colombian is reportedly closing in on a return to action following a three-match absence with a calf injury.

The manager will provide a definitive update on all of United’s injuries during his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday.

The good news is that Phil Jones may be fit

Yes, I still think they will get it mainly because LVG doesn't have to juggle European games and he's got a track record of sorting teams out and a large warchest to buy extra players to plug gaps. Nobody else of the "big" teams seems to have sorted their act out either apart from Chelsea. Would be happy if I was wrong tbh, especially if it was us who snuck in there :)

Where do you think they will finish?

5th or 6th this season. They havent got the consistency and the system doesnt work but Gaal wont be able to get it to gel in time for a run itno the top 4 i dont think. Remember there are teams who are waiting for consistency to kick in and then they will do well, us gunners, them alot (i hope not), spurs, city etc

They have the attack to win the league, and the defence tactics to get rlegated. Take your pick lol
