That kind of thing can affect effort and workrate but are you saying Howard didn't save those goals on Monday cause he knew he wouldn't be dropped?

Yeah, I'm not down with that line of thinking. To another example, Friedel is playing the same way he did before they acquired Lloris.

He needs competition at his spot because he's not playing as well as he should and its hurting the team. Motivation has little or nothing to do with it.

Probably just needs extra training sessions that involve shots that move at a snails pace and how to deal with one-on-ones (or how not jump over the shot).

I think it's about the state of mind. At present Howard knows he's got zero competition for his place as Mucha is inferior to him by a stretch. Now that doesn't mean that Howard won't train well or not give his all on the pitch BUT ........if he had another top notch keeper in competition with him, his mindset would be slightly different - he'd know he had to be at his peak all of the time, as he had an able replacement ready & capable of taking his shirt - therefore he'd be forced to stretch himself just that bit further in training & that could then pay dividends on a match day - its probably slightly sub conscious but players in every position tend to raise their own bar, when there's strong competition for places
